Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger became engaged in August 2012 after just one short month of dating. Kroeger popped the question with a memorably large ring. And, although Avril and Chad were married for two years, they remain good friends.

So, just what happened between the sweethearts of rock – and where do they stand today?

Updated August 28, 2023: 10 years after Chad Kroeger went down on one knee, Avril Lavigne got engaged once again in April 2022, this time to musician Mod Sun. However, a by February 2023, the couple had gone their separate ways. Avril subsequently went on to date rapper, Tyga. In June 2023, they split – though they were spotted out together for a Fourth of July party not long after. At the time of writing, it seems they’re committed to staying friends, post-split.

Chad Kroeger, on the other hand, has kept a lower profile, romantically. He has not remarried since her divorce from Avril Lavigne in 2015. As for the professional side of things, at the time of writing, he and Nickelback are in the midst of their “Get Rollin'” tour across the US.

The Canadian rockers first met in February of 2012 when they got together to co-write some new tunes. A romantic relationship eventually blossomed after spending some time together, and the artists enjoyed life as an engaged couple. Chad, who was 37 years old, popped the question to 27-year-old Avril in August of that year – 14-carat diamond ring in tow.

However, the giant sparkler wasn’t the only thing that made his proposal perfect. Speaking to Ryan Seacrest, she revealed that he’d proposed in the studio they’d been working in – and used her scrapbook to do so.

“I have been making this scrapbook of my time in the studio with a Polaroid camera and the only thing that was weird was I walked into the studio and he was putting a picture in to the book and I was like ‘What is he doing?’…And all of a sudden I walk over and he had taken a photo of himself holding the ring box and put the Polaroid in my scrapbook and because I had stickers everywhere he put in ‘Will you marry me?’ It was really romantic,” she reminisced.

Avril previously dated Brody Jenner, and she was also married to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley. However, this was Chad’s first time walking down the aisle.

When Avril Lavigne married Deryck Whibley in 2006, she shocked the public by shedding her punk rock clothes and donning a traditional white Vera Wang gown. The singer had a small outdoor ceremony with 100 guests and a reception with red and white themes in a luxury property. Everything about Lavigne’s first wedding was what people are supposed to do when they get married. Then came Chad Kroeger, who let Lavigne take the reins of the special day.

The Canadian couple hosted their ceremony for Canada Day, and Lavigne donned a gothic black gown to complement the gothic-themed wedding. About 110 family and friends attended the Chateau de la Napoule, an expansive medieval castle just outside Cannes.

How Does The Musical Duo Make It Work, Post-Split?

Fast-forward to 2015, and the lovebirds were no more. In an Instagram statement by Avril, she revealed, “Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we’ve created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other.”

She wasn’t kidding, there. Two years later, Avril joined Nickelback to perform their song, Rockstar at the Greek Theater. And, the supportiveness would go both ways.

Four years post-split, in an interview with USA Today, Avril shared that Chad had worked with her on on her 2019 album, Head Above Water.

“I would call him and send him songs to get his opinion, and if I was ever stuck on something, he’d help me out, which is super … cool, if you think about it. I’d play him songs on FaceTime and he’d be like, ‘I’m so proud of you, you did such a good job.’ So he just cares about me and wants to see me do well, which is really nice,” she shared.

Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger didn’t choose an Ed Sheeran song for their first dance. Instead, their wedding was so unique that they wrote a song called “If I Said I Loved You”. Per Genius, the song ended was leaked to the public in 2022. However, at the time of writing, there’s no record of it – so there’s a chance this one has been scrubbed from the internet.

Kroeger and Lavigne are no strangers to duets. After all, the first song the couple wrote together was “Let Me Go”, a sad track. Perhaps a bit of foreshadowing, but a beautiful piece nonetheless.

Avril Lavigne’s Struggle With Lyme Disease

Back in 2014, and while still married to Chad Kroeger, Avril Lavigne was diagnosed with lyme disease. In the years since, she’s opened up about just how debilitating it was, at times, and even based her song, Head Above Water on the sensation she had one night when she believed she was going to die.

“I felt like I was drowing,” she told People. “Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began.”

Once again, Chad was involved in the creative process, and according to USA Today, even featured in the song.

Speaking to People of working together on the album, and of Avril’s health, Chad couldn’t help but gush over her. “She’s really getting back to her old self, and that really makes me happy.”

He also shared, “I’ll love that girl ’til the day I die.”
