Kristen Stewart Horror Movie Becomes Netflix Hit Years After Flopping in Theaters

A horror film starring Kristen Stewart finds new popularity on Netflix after coming up short at the box office in 2020.

Kristen Stewart’s Underwater has resurfaced at Netflix, rising as one of the most-watched movies on the streaming platform years after flopping in theaters.

It’s worth noting that Underwater is only topped by five more recent films. In the No. 5 spot is The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was a tremendous success when it was released in theaters earlier this year. The first four films are all Netflix Originals with very recent releases on the streaming platform. In order, they include Leave the World BehindChicken Run: Dawn of the NuggetLeo, and Family Switch.

Underwater was directed by William Eubank and written by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad. Along with Stewart, the movie also starred Vincent Cassel (Jason Bourne), Jessica Henwick (The Matrix Resurrections), John Gallagher Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane), Mamoudou Athie (Archive 81), and T. J. Miller (Deadpool).

“It was so scary and so horrific. It wasn’t fun scary. It was f***ed up scary,” Stewart would say of her experience shooting the film, per Variety. “I was just scared. I was claustrophobic and I couldn’t deal with that. But this was a f***ing hellhole for a million other reasons.”

Adding that the physical challenges of filming Underwater were what attracted her to the project in the first place, Stewart continued, “We’re joking about how hard it was to make the movie, but I am attracted to things that are difficult. The only reason to do something is because it scares you.”

Stewart’s roles since Underwater include playing Princess Diana in the 2021 film Spencer, and her acclaimed performance had her nominated for an Academy Award. More recently, she co-created Hulu’s paranormal reality show Living for the Dead. Stewart also has multiple upcoming films in the works, which includes a role in Michael Angarano’s Sacramento alongside Michael Cera.

The film sank at the box office, making $40 million against its budget of $50-80 million. Now available to stream, the film rose to No. 6 on the Top 10 list for English-language movies for the week. According to Netflix, the film drew 5.8 million views with a total of 9.2 million viewing hours.
