Consultant for RMC, Stephen Brun recounted this Saturday his discovery of Victor Wembanyama when the current San Antonio Spurs player was only 11 years old. The former basketball player remembers a unique talent.
Stephen Brun discovered the Victor Wembanyama phenomenon at the age of 11. During his Stephen Time show this Saturday on RMC, the consultant returned to his first meeting with the man who plays eight years later in the NBA, with the San Antonio Spurs.
“He’s not even MVP of the tournament”
“I heard about it very early because I play in Boulogne-sur-Mer and there is an international tournament every year in the region in Bourbourg, reserved for 11-12 year olds. I am a sponsor of the tournament and I go there “, said Stephen Brun. “As I played at Nanterre for quite a few years, I have some connections. In this Nanterre youth team in the final against Mulhouse, I see this big boy who was 1.91m tall at 11 years old. He was everything thin, skinny and he dunked on 2.60m baskets.”

“I tell myself that this size is still strange. His team loses in the final and he is not even MVP of the tournament,” added Stephen Brun about Victor Wembanyama. “The following year, he came back, he was 12 years old and there he was MVP, winning the tournament. I was told that he was a phenomenon and that we should watch him express himself with a ball, that “He has something special. I saw him make blind passes, dribble between his legs, take three-point shots, run like boys who were 1.40m tall.”
“What I saw in an 11-12 year old tournament doesn’t exist and it won’t exist anymore,” concluded Brun. Having passed through Nanterre in his early days, Victor Wembanyama spent a final season in France with the Mets 92 before joining the NBA. The 19-year-old was drafted first overall last June. At the start of the season, he has already shown his talent in his new league, for example scoring 38 points in his team’s victory against the Suns on November 2.
