Gareth Southgate has quit his role as England manager after the Euro 2024 final defeat on Sunday.
His contract was due to expire .Gareth Southgate had steered the ship of England’s national football team for nearly eight years, after taking over from Sam Allardyce in November 2016.
On Tuesday morning he announced he will leave the role in an emotional statement. Despite not clinching a major trophy during his tenure, he has achieved more success than many of his predecessors. Southgate, a skilled defender in his prime, climbed the ladder at Crystal Palace before penning his first professional contract with the club in 1988.
He spent seven fruitful years in south London before moving to Aston Villa in 1995, where he made an impressive 191 appearances over six years. His playing career concluded at Middlesbrough, joining the North East side in 2001 and adding another 160 matches to his tally before retiring in 2006.
From 1995 to 2004, Southgate also earned 57 caps for England – invaluable experience for understanding the pressures of international football when he assumed managerial duties for the senior men’s team in 2016. Here, The Mirror provides a comprehensive guide to everything football enthusiasts need to know about Southgate; including his net worth, salary, achievements and future prospects.
Has Gareth Southgate been successful with England?
Despite not securing a major trophy for his country in either a player or managerial capacity, the 53-year-old has seen more success in the latter role than many of his predecessors. He’s currently England’s longest-serving manager since Bobby Robson and is arguably second only to Sir Alf Ramsey – the genius behind England’s 1966 World Cup victory – in terms of all-time success.
While his best World Cup performance was reaching the semi-finals with Croatia in 2018, Southgate has led England to two consecutive European Championship finals – coming painfully close to winning the 2020 tournament, only to be heartbreakingly defeated on penalties by Italy. The Euro 2024 final against Spain go-ahead in teh 86th minute, cinching victory.

What was Gareth Southgate’s salary as England manager?
Southgate’s contract – which was renewed in 2021 to run until the end of the current European Championships – reportedly paid him just over £5million per year, equivalent to around £100,000 per week. Only Fabio Capello sits higher in the reported England boss earnings throughout history, pulling in a staggering £6million per year during his tenure, while Sven Goran-Eriksson earned approximately £4.5million annually.
What is Gareth Southgate’s net worth?
The net worth of Gareth Southgate, the England manager, varies according to different sources. However, data from 2020 estimated his wealth at about £9m, accumulated from both his playing and managing careers.
What’s on the horizon for Gareth Southgate?
Speculation mounts that failure to clinch victory this Sunday could spell the end of Southgate’s tenure as England manager. Prior to the tournament, he declined an extension on his contract, which ends in December. This decision reportedly came out of concern that contract negotiations might distract from team focus.
In a recent interview with German newspaper Bild, Southgate confessed: “If we don’t win, I probably won’t be here anymore. Then it might be the last chance. I think about half of the national coaches leave after a tournament that’s the nature of international football. I’ve been here for almost eight years now and we’ve come close.”

He has also voiced concerns about maintaining credibility, saying: “So, I know that you can’t keep standing in front of the public and saying ‘please do a little more’ because at some point people will lose faith in your message. If we want to be a big team and I want to be a top coach, then you have to deliver in the big moments.”
In a candid Sky Sports interview last December, he reflected: “I was 35 years old when I managed in the Premier League and we finished 12th and 13th. I knew nothing like what I know now. There isn’t a job in world football that would intimidate or daunt you, having lived this one.”
Who’s next in line for the England hot seat?

Speculation is rife about who will take over the reins of the England squad now Gareth Southgate has stepped down. Graham Potter, the ex-Chelsea and Brighton gaffer, had been tipped as the favourite to lead the national team, especially since he’s free after his stint in west London ended on a sour note.
But let’s not count out other contenders with impressive credentials Eddie Howe, Pep Guardiola, and Mauricio Pochettino have all been mentioned as potential candidates to steer the Three Lions towards future glory, each boasting remarkable achievements in English top-tier football.
What do others reckon?
Alan Shearer had said wants Southgate to remain as England manager. Speaking before the Euro 2024 final against Spain in his role of Betfair ambassador, he said: “When you look at the bigger picture and remember where Gareth has taken this team – they were at rock bottom after the game against Iceland and we’re now expecting to be in finals. That tells you how well he’s done in the job. We couldn’t get over the line three years ago, so he now has to find a way to beat the best team in the tournament.
DON’T MISS
“I think Gareth will decide what he does himself and that’s right. Whether England win or lose against Spain, he’s got a big decision to make. Gareth has criticised the noise that’s gone on in terms of performances this tournament so whether he’s had enough or not and whether England win or not will all be factors he’ll take into consideration. He’ll be the one to decide his future and whatever decision he makes will be right in what he does.
“I’d like to see Gareth Southgate stay on as England manager. If England win Euro 2024, how can you walk away from a team that could potentially win the World Cup in two years time?
“It will be a huge decision, but hell do what’s right for him and what’s right for his family.”
