Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean have confessed that there’s often been some confusion about their relationship, as they revealed why they never pursued a potential romance.

The pair began skating together in 1975 after being paired up by Nottingham skating coach Janet Sawbridge. But they became household names after they won gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, in the former Yugoslavia, performing to the Bolero.

Their strong bond has been key to their successful partnership, with Dean referring to them as “best friends”.

Dean clarified that while they are “obviously not brother and sister”, they are “very close”. He further stated: “We’re best friends. We work together, we have a business together, but it never feels like a business. We rely on each other.”

Torvill and Dean have served as head judges on Dancing on Ice since the 10th series in 2018, having initially joined the show as coaches in 2006. This series sees them judging celebrities such as former EastEnders actress Charlie Brooks, Olympic legend Steve Redgrave, and Springwatch star Michaela Strachan.

Discussing their impending retirement on Dancing on Ice, Dean revealed: “We’re 50 years skating together. It’s our last tour, last time round, so when we’ve finished the tour our skates will be hung up.”

The pair are gearing up for their final tour titled Torvill and Dean: Our Last Dance, which runs from April 12 to May 11. The next episode of Dancing on Ice airs tonight (Sunday, January 26) at 6.25pm.
