Caitlin Clark was ‘guided’ by Breanna Stewart with ‘expensive’ advice, even legendary coach Dawn Staley had to nod in praise
Caitlin Clark has received priceless Breanna Stewart advice that Dawn Staley agrees with
Prior to winning the third WNBA championship of her career with the New York Liberty, Breanna Stewart asserted that Caitlin Clark needed to win titles to be in the ‘GOAT’ debate
Breanna Stewart cemented her status as one of the all-time greats in women’s basketball after propelling the New York Liberty to a championship – and in the process reaffirmed her opinion that Caitlin Clark has a ways to go before entering the “GOAT” conversation.
Earlier this month, the Liberty secured a thrilling 67-62 overtime win over the Minnesota Lynx in a winner-take-all Game 5 to secure their first championship in franchise history. Up until this season, New York had appeared in five previous Finals series but came up short each time.
The Liberty’s historic victory marked the third WNBA championship of Stewart’s decorated career. She secured her first ring with the Storm back in 2018, later propelling Seattle to another championship two years later.
While playing at the collegiate level, Stewart additionally achieved immense success with UConn. The dominant forward amassed four Naismith College Player of the Year awards, four NCAA championships and was named NCAA tournament Most Outstanding Player four times.
But earlier this year, it was Clark who was taking the college basketball landscape by storm. During her senior year at Iowa, the 22-year-old surpassed LSU’s “Pistol” Pete Maravich as the leading scorer in NCAA Division 1 basketball history while also propelling the Hawkeyes to three-straight conference tournament titles and back-to-back NCAA championship game appearances.
Ahead of Iowa’s face off against UConn in the Final Four back in April, Stewart asserted that Clark needed to win a national championship in order to be considered in the greatest-of-all time debate.

“Yeah. She does [need to win a title to be considered one of the greats],” Stewart said. “I think so. … Because then, you’re gonna look 10 years back and you’re gonna see all the records she’s broken and the points and stuff like that. But anybody knows your goal when you play college basketball is to win a national championship. So, you need one.”
South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley expressed a similar sentiment at the time, adding: “Yeah, I was really good in college, never won a championship. You got to win a championship. You’ve got to win a championship. That’s me personally. Like I had a great career. But it’s always, did you win a championship?
We] went to the Final Four three times. We never won. I do think – I agree with Stewy when it comes to winning the championship. We’re going to talk about GOATs, I think she’s the GOAT, to be able to win four National Championships and to be MVP. I think she was MVP all four times.
“If Caitlin wins the championship, she’s pretty damn good, yeah, like, she’s a GOAT,” she continued. “I mean, she’s really damn good regardless. But winning the championship would seal the deal. I hope to the dear Lord she doesn’t.
