The entertainment industry is not only popular for its impeccably compelling works, but also for the drama that rages within. With a new story popping up every once in a while, Hollywood in its off-sets itself is a place with much drama. And the renowned singer cum actress Cher found herself engulfed in the flames of it all with Tom Hardy’s Mad Max: Fury Road director, the late Peter Bogdanovich.
As it turns out, the late filmmaker wasn’t too fond of the pop star and had some harsh words for her after having worked with her, claiming she’d been difficult to work with all the while alleging her to be a ‘man-hater who can’t act.’
The Late Peter Bogdanovich’s Harsh Words For Cher
The late legend: Peter Bogdanovich
Although Cher’s man-hating reputation precedes her, the late legendary director Peter Bogdanovich might have taken it a bit too far. While the pair worked on only one movie together, Mask, throughout their respective careers, it wasn’t a pleasurable experience for either. This is evident from Tom Hardy‘s Mad Max: Fury Road filmmaker’s take on the 77-year-old television personality.
During an interview with Vulture, Bogdanovich was asked to name one actor who was the most difficult to work with. Answering with the Believe singer’s name, the director went on to resonate with his claim, saying,
“Well, she didn’t trust anybody, particularly men. She doesn’t like men. That’s why she’s named Cher: She dropped her father’s name. Sarkisian, it is. She can’t act. She won Best Actress at Cannes because I shot her very well.”
Continuing, he explained what he truly meant by saying she ‘couldn’t act’.
“She can’t sustain a scene. She couldn’t do what Tatum [O’Neal] did in Paper Moon. She’d start off in the right direction, but she’d go off wrong somehow, very quickly. So I shot a lot of close-ups of her because she’s very good in close-ups. Her eyes have the sadness of the world. You get to know her, [and] you find out it’s self-pity, but still, it translates well in movies. I shot more close-ups of her than I think in any picture I ever made.”
However, while she might not have performed to her fullest in the late Peter Bogdanovich’s Mask, thus, gaining his disapproval of her, Cher did end up bagging an Oscar two years later in 1987 for her work in Moonstruck.
The Late Peter Bogdanovich’s Dislike For Cher Was Reciprocated

Further in the interview with Vulture, the late visionary was asked about Cher’s opinion of him. To this, he said,
“Cher doesn’t like me.”
Explaining his claim, Peter Bogdanovich said:
“Well, because I didn’t like her. She was always looking like someone was cheating [on] her. I came to the set one day; I said, ‘You depress me, you’re always so down and acting like somebody’s stealing from you or something.’”
However, this mutual dislike seemingly didn’t last for long as the pair started to somewhat get along… only to end up on not-so-good terms when Bogdanovich sued the studios for ruining his movie.
“But finally, after about seven weeks of this, we started getting to like each other. She said, you know, we don’t watch out, we might end up liking each other. I said that would be amazing. And we did end up liking each other, and then when I sued the studio, she sided with the studio, of course. That was that.”
While we don’t really blame the late legendary visionary Peter Bogdanovich for his review of Cher considering her alleged long history of disliking men, the pop singer just might have changed over the years to become a better version of herself.
