On Saturday (Sept. 9), Lil Nas X debuted his highly anticipated documentary, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. In the film, the “Old Town Road” phenom was praised for his ability to be out and proud in a widely misogynistic industry, which led to him helping his brother, Tramon Hill, come out as bisexual. The rapper, himself, came out in 2019.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Hill detailed how the 24-year-old “opened doors” for him living his own truth. He explains, “My brother really opened doors for a lot of people. Yeah, he opened a door for me. What I mean by that, like, I’m not gay, though, you feel me? I’m bisexual. He helped me be real with myself. My brother made me more open to it.”

Hill was initially concerned about losing some people in his life after coming out, but his brother helped him work through that issue as well. “If you f**k with me, you f**k with me. If you don’t, you don’t. Bye. Get out of my presence. I don’t need you,” Hill stated. “At the end of the day, people are going to f**k with who they f**k with, so stop trying to chase a friend. A friend is going to always be there.”

The documentary followed Lil Nas as he embarked on his debut tour, Long Live Montero, in 2022 while also hanging out with Madonna and confronting homophobic protestors at his shows.

In a sit-down post-premiere (below), the “Industry Baby” artist shares how he originally didn’t want to do the film. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to do this at all. It’s a terrible idea.’ But then I was like, ‘F**k it, let’s do it anyway,’” he recalled. “I hate people knowing about my life because then I can’t keep my whole funny persona… but I’m happy I did it.”
