When questioned by The Hollywood Reporter about Charlize Theron’s executive producer credit in Murder Mystery 2, Garelick confessed that he was unsure about the details. He discovered her involvement just before finalizing the movie, and his reaction was filled with excitement, suggesting that her presence might lead to a potential villainous role in the next installment.
“To be honest, I don’t really know,” Garelick told The Hollywood Reporter. “I saw her credit right before we locked the movie. I’m like, ‘Oh, wow! Charlize is — This is awesome.’ Maybe she’ll be a villain in the next one.”

Considering Garelick’s suggestion, having Theron join a potential Murder Mystery 3 would be a seamless fit. As far back as 2012, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Theron was in discussions to headline a project titled Murder Mystery, helmed by director John Madden. Penned by James Vanderbilt, known for Zodiac the script was described as an affectionate deconstruction of an Agatha Christie-style thriller centered around an American couple framed for murder during their honeymoon.

While Theron eventually departed from the project, her previous attachment to it secured her an executive producing credit when the script later transformed into the Netflix hit featuring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

During the premiere of Murder Mystery 2, Aniston shared with Entertainment Tonight that while there’s no confirmation about a potential third installment, if the fans respond positively to the sequel, Netflix might consider greenlighting another movie.
