Some people think it’s the code that you can act for only one comic book franchise, more so when you’re working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But throughout the years, many stars have crossed the divide. And the latest celebrity to do so is none other than Mad Max : Fury Road actress Charlize Theron. She recently made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Clea during the post-credits scene for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a character who will surely play an important role in the future. She also made a cameo appearance for the superhero satire, The Boys.

Charlize has now acted in two superhero works in a very short span of time. And in a recent interview with Variety, she spilled the beans on what Marvel’s reaction was on learning about her cameo in the Amazon Prime Series. The 46-year-old actress admitted that she absolutely loved The Boys and its management. Her words were:
“Seth [Rogen, ‘The Boys’ executive producer] asked me a while back, and I will lay my body over broken glass for that guy and all of his partners at Point Gray, I absolutely love them, and we look after each other. I love the show. I think it’s really smart.”
She was completely on board with their project. And it was The Boys management who established contact with Theron first. Her cameo in the show was shot before she was approached by Marvel. But what happened when she told Marvel?
A ‘Marvel’ous Response
Charlize Theron revealed what was Marvel’s response on hearing her involvement with The Boys
Theron said that she was ‘very transparent’ with Marvel about her involvement. And Marvel was happy to know about her involvement in The Boys. She said Marvel’s response was, ‘this is great.’
Theron noted how the two projects were inherently different, the boys being a satiric take on the superhero genre and Marvel is, well, Marvel. She said, ‘I think there’s room for everything, and it doesn’t mean anything other than people are interested in these kind of worlds right now.’
And needless to say, fans are interested in both, the Multiverse and The Boys. Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness, apart from making money, has also introduced the idea of the multiverse, which opens up frighteningly many possibilities. But Michael Waldron, who wrote both Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Loki, had a warning for the upper Marvel management.
A Double-Edged Sword
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gives us a good glimpse of the Multiverse
Michael Waldron recently revealed the big problem with Marvel Studios’ use of the multiverse. He underlines the importance of treading the multiverse very cautiously. During a previous discussion with SFX Magazine, the writer detailed how Marvel Studios’ use of the multiverse could become a double-edged sword.
“The danger is you can expand your scope too wide, and you can actually reduce the stakes if you don’t make it personal as you go bigger and wider. But the opportunity in the multiverse is to have characters confront literal ‘What ifs?’ and alternate versions of themselves and perhaps others in their lives.
It’s an interesting way to hold up a mirror to characters. In every way, it shapes the emotional heart of the story. It has to. The multiverse isn’t just a MacGuffin where we’re like, ‘Okay, this is just a kitschy thing that we’re playing with in this movie.’
If you’re faced with alternate realities and with alternate versions of yourself that has to become the emotional heart, exploring who you might be if you were a different version of yourself, if you made other choices, the right choices or the wrong choices. It’s complex stuff, emotionally, and that’s exactly why it’s so thrilling and so great for a cast as dramatically talented as this one.”
