Aeon Flux didn’t perform well at the box office and didn’t recoup its production costs during its theatrical run.  Charlize Theron starred in the 2005 film which was a live-action adaptation of the MTV animated series. The movie has a dismal 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which highlights how despised the movie was when it first came out. But the actress herself admitted that none of that came as a surprise to her.

The 47-year star who had just won an Oscar for her performance in Monster, and Karyn Kusama, a director who gained notoriety for her Sundance smash, the boxing drama Girlfight, were the two people Paramount and MTV movies were betting on at the time.

She confessed to Hollywood Report, “I knew Aeon Flux was going to be a f**king flop, I knew it from the beginning, that’s why I did Arrested Development.”

The Oscar winner accepted the project due to its story’s relevance to contemporary America. The actress tried to fight for the movie, but she didn’t have the power or was in a position to demand certain things during that time. She knew they were in trouble but didn’t have the answer to fixing the problem, so she decided to stay quiet.

Aeon Flux was a disappointment at the box office

The movie directed by Karyn Kusama had a lot of hopes. Aeon Flux has an intriguing plot, but it centers on a band of rebels who are out to overthrow a repressive government. The story is set in the year 25th century. Aeon Flux, played by the Oscar winner, is then tasked with killing the Chairman. 

The entire movie is really about questioning your government in this day and age. The key is to take a stand and challenge what your government is doing, which is exactly what Aeon does in the film.

Although the movie’s storyline was interesting it received a negative review from critics. Additionally, viewers were unimpressed, and in the end, the film only made a pitiful $52.3 million, far less than its $62 million production budget.
