Expend4bles director Scott Waugh hails Megan Fox for what she brought to the table as a new addition to the film franchise.

SUMMARY

Director Scott Waugh praises Megan Fox’s performance in Expend4bles, highlighting her believability and ability to hold her own with the male-dominated cast.
Fox’s character plays a pivotal role in the film, and her physical talent and ability to stand up to the big personalities on set make her fit in well.
Despite the film’s commercial and critical struggles, there is uncertainty about whether Fox will return for a potential fifth Expendables movie.

Expend4bles star Megan Fox gets high praise from director Scott Waugh after making her debut in the hard-hitting action film franchise.

Speaking with Moviefone, Waugh hailed Fox’s performance as Gina, a CIA operator and former girlfriend of the Expendables’ knife expert Lee Christmas. The Expend4bles helmer felt she held her own with the male-dominant cast and looked believable in her role. “Look, I think it was definitely a part of the script when I came in with Megan’s character, Gina, and I really enjoyed the fact that there was a female character that was on equal ground and was badass. It’s incredible working with somebody like Megan because she doesn’t give herself enough credit,” Waugh said.

Fox’s character played a pivotal role in Expend4bles, especially during one of the group’s earlier missions when she was elevated after a tragic event in Libya. Waugh believes she was ideal for the part because she wasn’t intimidated by the big personalities on the cast including Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

“I was working with her. I’m like, ‘You’re so physically talented,’ and I think she’s a wonderful actress, and she fits in so well with the rest of the guys because she can hold her own weight. She doesn’t take any s*** from any of the guys, and I just love that. That’s why I think she just fits in with those types of big personalities,” he said.

Will Megan Fox Return in a Fifth Expendables Movie?

Before joining Expend4bles, Fox had experience starring in action films, especially during the Transformers movie franchise and 2020’s Rogue. Her character’s work as a high-ranking CIA official, as well as her past with Christmas, was explored in the movie. If there is another sequel in The Expendables franchise, which its producers are openly willing to explore, it remains to be seen if she will be brought back given her importance in Expend4bles.

Despite the fresh blood added to the cast, Expend4bles has been getting wounded so far, both commercially and critically. Made on a $100 million budget, the movie has earned just $32.7 million globally to date after a franchise-low opening weekend in theaters. Additionally, the movie has a paltry 13% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, easily the lowest in the film series, with feedback bashing the movie’s pacing, CGI and story beats, though Statham’s showing received praise.

After starring in the R-rated Expend4bles, Fox is due to feature in the animated action film, Naya Legend of the Golden Dolphin and has been filming the upcoming sci-fi thriller, Subservience. For Waugh, this is his second action flick to drop in 2023 as he also directed the John Cena and Jackie Chan-led Netflix effort, Hidden Strike.
