Gina and Lee Christmas have a tempestuous relationship that goes through ups and downs, but ultimately they cannot live without each other. Megan Fox joined Sylvester Stallone’s action franchise as Gina in The Expendables 4 as Gina, a hot-headed mercenary who follows in the footsteps of the previous female stars (like Ronda Rousey) who have made a name for themselves among the cohort of mostly male action stars whose heyday was in the ’80s and ’90s. Gina has a barbed word for Expendables leader Barney Ross (Stallone) when he shows up at the home she shares with his right-hand Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), and it’s clear from her ubiquitous use of the word “Neanderthal” what she thinks of them and their group.
No stranger to the action genre, Fox cut her teeth on Michael Bay’s Transformers movies in the ’00s and the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise in the ’10s, so popping up in The Expendables franchise feels like a logical career move. Not only does she hold her own around the likes of Randy Couture and Dolph Lundgren, but she channels a lot of natural charisma into a movie that needs the assist considering Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Trench isn’t in The Expendables 4 and other big stars dropped out of the franchise. Considering how The Expend4bles ends, Fox may even have a bigger part to play going forward.
Megan Fox’s Gina Works For The CIA & Expendables
Gina works for the CIA as well as the Expendables, giving her a good cross-section of skills as well as information. Because of her connections, she knows about Barney Ross’s involvement in an incident between two international agencies to a degree that surprises Christmas, and is up to speed on the Libyan factory raids in order to steal nuclear detonators. Like a truly competent agent, she keeps certain pieces of information close to the breast only to be revealed at the opportune moment and takes her orders from Marsh (Andy Garcia) just like the rest of the well-muscled mercenary unit.
Gina is a new character in The Expendables franchise but is meant to have been working behind the scenes for some time. In The Expendables, Christmas was involved with Lacy (Charisma Carpenter), but her role didn’t include much more than worrying about him on a mission or being someone for him to save. Gina presents herself as his equal in everything from hand to hand combat to tactical strategy, and it’s encouraging to see Statham and Fox sharing the screen in a way that amplifies their mutual respect and recognizes that the female love interests in the franchise can be more than damsels in distress.
Gina & Lee Christmas’ Relationship Status In Expendables 4
When Gina is first introduced in The Expendables 4, it’s made to look like she’s Christmas’s unstable partner by showing her throwing wine glasses, screaming, and insulting him. When she appears again after he sneaks into her house, she’s a calm, collected operative who’s perfectly able to overpower him during a sexy hand-to-hand combat scene that leads to a romantic interlude. It’s clear that she while her moods could be mercurial, she could control her emotions when the mission called for it, and that the two were destined to be reunited after going through a life-or-death mission to prevent WWIII off the coast of Russia.
Even though Gina and Christmas break up at the beginning of The Expendables 4 they’re back together by the end. It’s clear that the tempestuous nature of their relationship dynamic is one that, while it may be aggravating in the short term, is something that they can’t see themselves living without. Not only do the pair have chemistry and passion together, they understand what it takes to live the same violent lifestyle, which as Barney has always told Christmas is one of the major reasons none of the members of the team have any strong connections with lovers or family members.
Gina Becomes The Temporary Expendables Team Leader
After Barney appears to die in Libya, a celebration of life is held in his honor at his favorite bar, where Christmas is noticeably distraught at losing a man who was like a brother to him as well as a mentor. As if things couldn’t get any worse, he’s thrown out of the team for trying to save Barney when his plane went down rather than making his sacrifice worth something and staying on target to get the nuclear detonators. With Christmas out a new leader has to succeed Barney, and Marsh chooses Gina despite the fact that she’s had no interaction with the rest of the team onscreen.
There’s a lot to process when Gina is made the default leader of The Expendables, the least of which comes from her absence in the previous films. This order comes from Marsh, however, whose maneuvers later in the film somewhat suggest that he was hoping, given the fact that she often butted heads with Barney and Christmas, Gina would be a turncoat against her own team. It’s almost as though somewhere on the cutting room floor of the movie an alternate ending exists where Gina betrays the team and Christmas, but fortunately, she remains true to them in the final cut narrative.
Will Megan Fox Return For Future Expendables Movies?
Gina is present at the end of The Expend4bles when Barney is celebrating with the rest of the team and seems to have repaired her relationship with Christmas. It’s safe to say that if The Expendables 5 happens, Megan Fox will be involved. She starred in Till Death in 2021, a wintry thriller produced by the same studio behind The Expen4bles, so a professional working relationship could mean that she’ll be game for appearing in future installments, particularly if the franchise goes in a direction where more women are involved with the team.
Having Megan Fox in the mix really highlights front and center how much the next film in The Expendables franchise needs to focus on more female characters. The female Expendables movie being scrapped could prove to be a big franchise problem if The Expendables 4 Rotten Tomatoes score remains low and the movie is really Sylvester Stallone’s last mission as Barney Ross. With Stallone clearly passing the torch to Statham considering how much Christmas is in the film and saving the day, it’s safe to say that Gina will stick around too, as both his love interest and more importantly as a member of The Expendables.
