The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie which came out in 2014 was the fifth movie of the franchise and the first movie of the duology of movies that rebooted the series. Although the series was not much of a success in terms of ratings, it still was not a flop at the box office as the movie somehow managed to gross over almost $493 million at the box office.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie almost turned out to be a bigger failure than it already was after the producer of the movie, Michael Bay allegedly announced that the Ninja Turtles actually came from an alien race and therefore the movie received massive backlash from the fans until Bay cleared up the confusion around the same.
Michael Bay said that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came from an alien race
Once in a speech while introducing the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Michael Bay screwed up big time and the reboot of the franchise almost flopped before even the release of the first movie. Bay said,
“Kids are going to believe one day that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable.”
Michael Bay
The fans of the franchise were really enraged upon hearing this and Michael Bay received a huge backlash from the fans. However, the Transformers director cleared the air around the confusion later and the movie went on to be a commercial success.
Megan Fox’s dialogue in the movie referred to Michael Bay’s screw-up speech earlier
Michael Bay went on to correct his screw-up from earlier and revealed that the Ninja Turtles are not going to be from an alien race after all. He said,
“There was that quote saying that we’re making [the Ninja Turtles as] aliens. We’re not. It’s the ooze. It’s from the original source material. These are from the original writers, and I never went out to correct myself in the press.“
Megan Fox‘s character, April O’Neil even had a conversation with her co-worker, Vern Fenwick in the movie where they made a dig at the early plot of the movie where Ninja Turtles were going to come from an alien race. Fenwick asks April O’Neil, “So they’re aliens?” and she replies with,
“No, that’s stupid. They’re reptiles.”
Megan Fox as April O’Neil
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was a commercial success as the movie went on to gross almost $493 million against a budget of $125–150 million. Although the movie received heavily negative reviews from critics, the visual effects and action sequences were still praised by the fans.
