The situation was quite a mess as he was fired just a couple of days before the shooting began, replacing him, they cast Mark Wahlberg in quick succession. Although, according to Ryan Gosling, this was not the primary reason why he was fired from the show. He felt that the main reason was his age and the age of his character were drastically apart, and it would create many complications and ultimately he was let go from this role.

During an interview, Gosling also added that Mark Wahlberg would be better suited for this role of a broken father rather than him and it was an incredible decision from filmmaker Peter Jackson, given the timeframe of the incident. Furthermore, he went on to add that he would be the first guy in line to buy the tickets for the movie.
