Former Star Wars actor Liam Neeson claimed that when filming his first action scene with Ewan McGregor in The Phantom Menace, he truly made lightsaber noises. The actor who portrayed Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn opposite Ewan McGregor‘s Obi-Wan Kenobi on the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast, Liam Neeson, revealed how director George Lucas instructed them to stop since the improvised sound effects weren’t essential. Neeson explained:

“The first time, we actually had to use the lightsaber to start a little fight. We both automatically [made the noises],”. “George said, ‘Let’s cut there. Boys, we can add that in later.”

The actor claimed that while he and Ewan McGregor, who was playing Obi-Wan, were filming a scene, they both pulled out their lightsabers and made the distinctive “vroom, vroom” noises associated with the weapon. This was a humorous encounter for the actors as it made them laugh and eventually, the director stopped them as he thought of using those sounds post-production. Neeson also touched on his experience in Star Wars and what he thinks of it now.
