Julia Roberts has starred in some iconic rom-coms over the years, but only one sits at the top of her list when it comes to a considering a sequel.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that aired Thursday, the Oscar-winning actress was asked by a viewer to pick a movie of hers of which she’d love to make a follow-up. And her answer came quickly.

“That’s a really good question and I’ve never been asked it,” said Roberts, 56, before choosing My Best Friend’s Wedding.

The comedy was a global box office hit when it opened in June 1997. Directed by P.J. Hogan, it follows Roberts as Jules, a food journalist who realizes she’s in love with her longtime best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney) after he reveals he’s engaged to new love, Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Desperate to win his heart, Jules spends the next four days trying to break up his wedding, even faking an engagement to her gay best friend, George (Rupert Everett) out of desperation.

Of course, spoiler alert — it doesn’t end well for Jules, with Michael choosing Kimmy in the end. But the richness of the characters and the dynamics between them means there’s plenty of material to explore for a sequel, as Roberts told Andy Cohen, 55.

“There’s so many people in it,” she said, noting she’d want “to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going…”

Asked by another WWHL viewer who she thought Michael should have chosen, Roberts stuck with her character. “Well, I mean, of course, Jules. But he married Kimmy!”

Roberts isn’t the only star of the iconic movie who has dreamed about a sequel.

While appearing on The Talk in November 2018, Mulroney said he wouldn’t be opposed to revisiting his onscreen character.

“I’m certainly not in the decision-making process,” said Mulroney — who was working with Roberts on Amazon Video’s thriller Homecoming at the time.

“I’ve been clear from the beginning, I’ve been clear from 1997 that I’m ready for a sequel. So, I’m on record,” he said.

The cast reunited in 2019 for Entertainment Weekly‘s romantic comedy issue, reminiscing about filming and imagining where their characters would be now. Roberts said wedding saboteur Jules would probably be a marriage counselor.

“Those who can’t, teach,” she joked.

Looking back on the success of the film and its legacy ahead of its 25th anniversary in 2002, Roberts reflected on the magic between herself, Mulroney, Diaz and Everett.

“We really got lucky coming together,” said Roberts, in an interview with E! Daily Pop. “None of us knew each other before we made the movie, and we just had a really great chemistry. It just worked. I mean, we all really liked each other. Dermot and I are still really great friends — we talk all the time, And I think that that is a testament to the beautiful time that we all had making this film together.”
