Actress Julia Roberts told Gayle King that Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King paid the hospital bill for Julia Roberts’ birth as her parents couldn’t afford it. She explained how her parents befriended the great leader,
“One day Coretta called my mother and asked if her kids could be part of the school because they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept her kids. My mom was like, ‘Sure, come on over,’ and so they all just became friends, and they helped us out of a jam.”
This was during the 1960s and the Kings had a hard time trying to admit their kids to a theatre school.

Back in the 1960s, when Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Yolanda, was cast in a role where she had to kiss a white actor, a car was blown outside Julia Roberts’ parents’ theatre school by a Ku Klux Klan member in retaliation.
Her parents’ decision to cast Yolanda was called “extraordinary” because people didn’t see “little black children interacting with little white kids in acting school” back then.
