Julia Roberts talks about wanting to see given a potential sequel of her hit movie, My Best Friend’s Wedding.
SUMMARY
1990’s Pretty Woman proved to be the iconic Julia Roberts’ first major hit.
While she does not generally look back, Roberts claimed that she wanted a sequel of one of her past movies.
That, was My Best Friend’s Wedding, which the actress claims she was unhappy with the ending of.
Julia Roberts became a household name due to her work in strings of romantic comedy films in the 1990s. After making her kickstart in the late 1980s, she catapulted to stardom with 1990’s Pretty Woman. Her on-screen charm continued to appeal to the audience, eventually raising her status in the entertainment world. Roberts recently claimed that her 1997 movie, My Best Friend’s Wedding deserves a sequel after admitting to being unhappy with the original plot ending.

P. J. Hogan’s directorial follows the story of Roberts’s character, Julianne Potter who realizes she’s in love with her best friend Michael O’Neal (portrayed by Dermot Mulroney) after he announces his engagement to Cameron Diaz’s character, Kimberly Wallace. The plot revolves around Julianne decides to sabotage Michael’s wedding day to win him back. The movie was a global box-office hit and it looks like the former wants its sequel!

In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, she was asked to name a project from her iconic career that she would like to see receive a potential sequel.
The Valentine’s Day actress replied, “I think, maybe, My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Stating the reason, she mentioned,
“Because there’s so many people in it, and to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going and…”
Andy Cohen, the host of the show chimed in to ask a follow-up question tweeted by a fan asking,
“Who do you think Michael should’ve married in My Best Friend’s Wedding?”
Julia Roberts responded,
“Well, I mean, of course, Jules,” adding, “But he married Kimmy.”
Like everyone else, the actress also wanted a different ending for her character but the plot was otherwise. In the movie, Julianne with the help of her gay friend, George Downes (played by Rupert Everett) plans different schemes to sabotage Michael’s wedding day. However, in the end, she realizes that Michael doesn’t love her back and the wedding day goes as planned. While the protagonist could not get her happy ending, her character went through significant development. However, the movie could have ended up in an entirely different way for Roberts’ character.

While the movie has always intended to never let Julianne win back her best friend, the original script gave her a happy ending by meeting her with a new guy (John Corbett) in the final scene. While the test audiences didn’t like the idea, the studio wanted a happy ending for Roberts’s character.
As per EW, the film director explained,
“They were very nervous because we were making a Julia Roberts film and they couldn’t have her end up alone and unhappy,” adding, “So we had to come up with something that pleased the studio, but that was acceptable to the audience.”
They eventually decided to add Rupert Everett’s character as “her conscience throughout.” The movie eventually ended on a light note with Julianne showing up to dance with Downes at her best friend’s wedding.
