With Mark Wahlberg playing the role of the high school dropout Eddie Adams aka Dirk Diggler, Burt Reynolds was hired for the role of Jack Horner, the successful p*rn director and a mentor to the troubled Dirk. Following his appearance, Reynolds earned an Oscar nod for his role as the adult filmmaker, who is later forced to produce poor-quality movies for Floyd Gondolli (Philip Baker Hall).

However, despite all the praises and accolades, Burt Reynolds admitted hating Paul Thomas Anderson’s movie. In a 2015 interview at a The Guardian Live event, the actor addressed the reason behind his hatred for the 1997 movie. Admitting that despite Boogie Nights’ popularity, he has never watched it, Reynolds stated that he hated both working for the film and with director Paul Thomas Anderson.

Opening up about the reasons behind his hatred for the film, Burt Reynolds expressed his deep disdain for the p*rn industry. Having mixed feelings and opinions about the existence of adult films, Reynolds stated that since Boogie Nights deals with the lives of adult film stars and directors, he hated his participation in such a project.

“I don’t like those people, I feel like they are due for a very hard time because they tried to do legitimate film and they’re never going to be able to. It’s sad, they were very sad people and they showed up a lot of times on set. It’s a one-way street, if you go down that road as an actor, you’re finished.”
Stating how p*rn stars are basically people who tried way too hard to make a breakthrough in the entertainment industry but failed miserably and ended up in adult films, Burt Reynolds mentioned that they are trapped forever in that doom. Calling p*rn a one-way street, Reynolds stated that an actor who enters the adult film industry, never makes their way out, and it’s sad.

Admitting that he was offered another project – Magnolia, by the director, Reynolds claimed that making one movie with Anderson was enough for him. “I’d done my picture with Paul Thomas Anderson, that was enough for me” the actor confessed. Revealing his deep disgust for the Academy Awards-nominated movie and its director, Reynolds rested his case.
