Megan Fox, despite being one of the largest sex symbols in Hollywood, suffers from body dysmorphia. Since she was a little girl, before she was a famous actress and model, Fox felt that her body had to look a certain way. This lead to a lifetime of insecurities and trauma, which the actress is still dealing with to this very day.

Fox is publicly known for being a little out their with the way she dresses and her behavior, but she felt for a long time that she had to shelter that aspect of herself from the world. Though she has begun to embrace that side of her and dress how she wants, no matter the comments on social media, Fox still has trouble viewing her body the way everyone else does. Here’s how Fox has struggled with body dysmorphia and her journey to self-love.

Megan Fox Has Body Dysmorphia

Megan Fox has been a sex symbol in Hollywood since she first rose in popularity after starring alongside Shia LeBeouf in the 2007 film Transformers. Already, that movie created a public view of her being one of the most attractive women on the planet.

Fox has gone on to star in many more productions, including Jennifer’s Body, the series New Girl, and Midnight in the Switchgrass.

According to the public, Fox had it all: a stunning body and perfect face. Behind closed doors, however, Fox was suffering horribly from body dysmorphia.

Body dysmorphia is defined as a mental illness when a person as an obsessive focus on perceived flaw. This can cause the person to not view their appearance the same way others do. In other words, they may perceive themselves to be hideous when in reality that is not the case.

Fox first opened up to British GQ in October 2021 about her struggle with body dysmorphia.

“Yeah, I have body dysmorphia. I have a lot of deep insecurities,” she opened up to the outlet.

“We may look at somebody and think, ‘That person’s so beautiful. Their life must be so easy.’ They most likely don’t feel that way about themselves,” Fox continued, implying that she has never felt her life was easy or that she is beautiful.

In regard to hiding parts of her identity from the public, Fox also shared that she felt she had minimized herself in order to fit in.

“I think I had either put myself in, or allowed other people to put me in, this weird box that didn’t quite fit me, where I hadn’t lived my own life as myself for a really long time. The parts of me that were always eccentric or strange and didn’t belong within my own family unit or within Hollywood.”

What Megan Fox Has Said About Her Body

Megan Fox has continued the conversation about her mental health since first opening up to the public in 2021 about her body dysmorphia.

In 2023, alongside other famous women such as Martha Stewart, Fox was on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine. Alongside the cover shoot, Fox gave an interview in which she talked a great deal about her body and how she feels about it now.

“I have body dysmorphia,” the actress said outright once again. “I don’t ever see myself the way other people see me.”

“There is never a point in my life where I loved my body, never, ever.”

Hearing Fox say these words shocked fans, because according to the public, Fox is a beautiful woman. It was shocking for fans of Fox to learn that she too has struggled with her appearance. Being a sex symbol for the world does not mean that she always feels beautiful.

Fox dove deeper into her body dysmorphia, revealing that it has affected her since she was a child.

“When I was little, that was like an obsession I had, that I should look this way,” Fox said. “And why I had an awareness of my body that young, I’m not sure.”

“It definitely wasn’t environmental because I grew up in a very religious environment where bodies weren’t even, like, acknowledged.” Fox was raised in a very strict household, and fans have wondered if the way she lives her life now has affected her relationship with her parents.

“The journey of, like, loving myself is gonna be never-ending, I think.”

Fox also added that she wished people saw more than just her physical appearance. “I wished everyone noticed my aura, because I have a rainbow aura, and it’s special.”

How Megan Fox Is Overcoming Her Insecurities

Megan Fox mentioned in her interview with Sports Illustrated that loving herself and her body is going to be a lifelong venture, and that is certainly true.

Body dysmorphia is not an easy mental illness to overcome. Many spend years in therapy attempting to view themselves the way the rest of the world does. Other actresses, even, have opened up about feeling insecure about their body.

Selena Gomez has become a huge spokeswoman for self-love and body-love. Her makeup brand Rare Beauty was inspired by the message of self-love. The singer and actress has put a lot of work into making mental health and body image concerns a strong topic in society.

Fox herself is embodying this notion by continuing to discuss her body dysmorphia. By opening up, she is not only allowing herself to heal, but also allow others to feel more comfortable discussing it.

Fox attributes a lot of her growth, specifically in opening up her personality, to her fiance Machine Gun Kelly.

“You know, famously, like, I’m an unusual person. And I had buried a lot of that because it didn’t have a place to live,” she told British GQ in the previously mentioned article. “That’s something that, meeting him, it’s like meeting your own soul’s reflection.”

Fox continues to work on her body dysmorphia, and it is certainly not stopping her from wearing or posting on social media what she wants.
