SUMMARY

Donald Trump made a cameo appearance as the owner of The Plaza Hotel in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
The former president of the United States claimed that director Chris Columbus and team begged him to appear in the movie.
He stated that he didn’t want to do it, but the movie turned into a cult classic because of his cameo.

Donald Trump claims he is one of the prime reasons Home Alone 2: Lost in New York became iconic. The former US president made a cameo in the movie, which is still popular among the fans of the franchise. However, director Chris Columbus stated a few years ago that the cameo wasn’t pre-planned, and the former POTUS “bullied himself” into the movie.

Donald Trump, who was the then-owner of The Plaza Hotel, could be spotted in the hotel scene of the movie where he played his real-life role as its owner. Now, according to Trump, Chris Columbus and the team begged him to make a cameo in the Macaulay Culkin movie. He is of the notion that his presence played a huge part in making the movie superhit.

Was Home Alone 2 a success because of Donald Trump?

Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York are considered two of the most iconic Christmas movies ever made. The Macaulay Culkin movies are appreciated to date. The ardent fans of the franchise would remember that the second movie featured a scene where we spotted the 45th President of the United States in a cameo appearance as the owner of the Plaza Hotel.

In a 2020 interview, Chris Columbus gave an interview where he stated that the former president forced his way into the movie. In a recent social media post on his Truth Social account, Donald Trump replied to the allegations and stated that it was Chris Columbus and the team that begged him to appear in the movie.
“30 years ago (how time flies!), Director Chris Columbus, and others, were begging me to make a cameo appearance in Home Alone 2. They rented the Plaza Hotel in New York, which I owned at the time. I was very busy and didn’t want to do it. They were very nice, but above all, persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history!”
Trump very confidently claimed that the cameo skyrocketed the success of the movie and is one of the primary reasons why the movie is loved to date- “That little cameo took off like a rocket, and the movie was a big success, and still is, especially around Christmas time.” However, the scenario is very different if Columbus is to be believed as he even thought of editing out the cameo.

When Chris Columbus spoke about the scene for the first time in 2020 in an interview with Business Insider, he stated that Donald Trump “bullied himself” into the movie. They needed the lobby of The Plaza Hotel to shoot as they couldn’t recreate it on a soundstage. Like every other place, they also paid the fees. However, Trump was adamant about getting a cameo appearance in the movie.
“We wanted to shoot in the lobby. We couldn’t rebuild The Plaza on a soundstage. We paid the fee, but he also said, ‘The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie,’ So we agreed to put him in the movie.”
The Mrs. Doubtfire director was unsure if the cameo would be there in the final cut of the movie. He decided to see the audience’s reaction first. When Home Alone 2 was shown to an audience, the movie aced the test. The audience cheered when The Plaza Hotel owner appeared on-screen, and thus, the cameo made it to the final cut. But it is only up to the audience who would give the final verdict if the movie was a hit because of the content or Donald Trump’s cameo.
