Mark Wahlberg’s war drama recently made its debut on Netflix, quickly gaining a huge viewership on the platform. According to the streaming giant, the film accumulated 8 million hours of viewing and 4 million total views.
With these impressive stats, the film found itself a place in the Netflix Global Top 10 for the week of November 13 to 19, in sixth position.
David Fincher’s The Killer topped the charts globally, however, Lone Survivor surpassed it in the number of U.S. viewers. The film also ranked number 2 in the U.S., just behind Best. Christmas. Ever!.
Films like Monster Hunter, Locked In, and F9: The Fast Saga also beat the film to the top 5 spots globally. Other films that regained interest from U.S. audiences this week, included Real Steel, Minions, and A Walk In The Woods.
Lone Survivor was a dramatic adaptation of the real-life Operation Red Wings, a U.S. counter-insurgent mission gone awry, resulting in the tragic death of three Navy SEALs.
The four-man team was tasked with tracking down Taliban leader, Ahmed Shah, and was ambushed by Shah’s team before they could get to him. Marcus Luttrell was the only survivor, who received the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his acts of heroism against the Taliban terrorists.
The film’s Netflix success also comes in the wake of Veterans Day observed on November 11th. The film carries added significance as Wahlberg’s father, Donald Edmond Wahlberg Sr., was an army veteran of the Korean War.
Mark Wahlberg’s Film Was Also Riddled With Controversy
Lone Survivor 2013
Lone Survivor was praised for Peter Berg’s direction, acting, story, visuals, and battle sequences. However, the director’s focus on action over character development received criticism within a cinematic context. The film also had its share of controversy after the over-dramatization of events led to some historical inaccuracies.
While Wahlberg’s film stayed true to the source material for the most part, some Hollywood dramatization exaggerated certain aspects.
Some critics argued that the filmmakers did not do proper research and showed a certain level of irresponsibility in portraying real-life military operations. Despite the criticisms, the film was acknowledged by many as a fitting homage to the lost lives during Operation Red Wings.
The film was nominated for two Oscars for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. This newfound fame for the film adds to its original success, grossing $154 million at the box office against a budget of $40 million.
