Luis Suarez is poised to head Stateside and link up with former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi at MLS outfit Inter Miami.

The 36-year-old has been one of the most deadly strikers of the modern era and is now coming towards the end of his successful career.

The Uruguay international has most recently been plying his trade in Brazil with Gremio, having signed a two-year deal with the club in December 2022.

However, his deal there has been ended a year early owing to knee issues which have been exacerbated due to the rigours of playing in the Brazilian league and he is now a free agent.

But the striker is not about to hang up his boots and will instead link up with former Barca team-mate Messi at Inter Miami.

Messi and Suarez spent six seasons together at Barcelona, forming a deadly partnership alongside Neymar which haunted defences across Europe.

The trident won four La Liga titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup during that time.

Throughout his career, Suarez has sported a wrist brace on his right hand, ever since his time at Liverpool, before moving to the Camp Nou in 2014.

The striker began wearing one after damaging a bone in his hand while at Anfield but, even after the injury had healed, he continued to wear it and has done ever since – but why?

In an interview with Spanish publication Sport back in 2017, Suarez outlined the reason why and believes it has become a superstitious tradition of his.

He said: “I had an injury a couple of years ago at Liverpool.

“I f***ed a bone in my right hand, a fissure, and they put on a bandage.

“Afterwards I was fine, the finger was OK, but I kept it.

“I also wore a red ribbon and as in the Premier League they don’t let you play with anything, I took advantage of the bandage to cover the red ribbon, and now it’s a tradition. I even played with long sleeve shirts and kept wearing it.

“I have my crazy things. Each time I come on the pitch I kiss the tattoo of my daughter and my wife. We players are very superstitious.”

So if any MLS fans are concerned Suarez has a long-term injury, do not worry and now you know why.
