While speaking to Interview Magazine, Christian Bale spoke to Graham Fuller, and the two dove deep into what makes Bale function as an actor. Bale revealed that his role in the 2009 film Public Enemies made people treat him like a freak.

”Yes. Suddenly people were saying I was cocky because I’d done a Steven Spielberg movie and thought I was better than everyone else, which surprised me at first.

I suddenly started feeling like a freak because everyone was treating me differently. It was confusing, and I did wonder if acting was for me anymore.”

Christian Bale and Johnny Depp-starrer Public Enemies was a biopic drama directed by Michael Mann. The movie was an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s 2004 book Public Enemies:

America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34. Depp portrayed John Dillinger while Bale portrayed FBI agent Melvin Purvis.

While speaking with Wales Online via The News, Christian opened up about his relationship with Johnny Depp. Bale revealed that he didn’t speak to Depp on the set of Public Enemies so that they didn’t affect their on-screen presence, something that he enjoyed.

“I didn’t want to talk unless it was while we were doing a scene, I enjoy it that way. Johnny seemed happy to do it that way, too. We really didn’t get to know each other better between takes.”

Bale also added that this helped in their performance in the movie as the story was very similar to how they acted towards each other on set. Regardless, Christian Bale will continue to be one of the best method actors in Hollywood and that’s never changing.
