Lionel has named Tottenham centre-back Christian Romero as “the best defender in the world” and his comments have divided opinion.

Messi became Argentina’s hero for the umpteenth time on Thursday, scoring a stunning late free-kick to lead his country to a narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their World Cup qualifying clash.

But despite his monumental effort, Messi took the time to praise Romero after the game, labelling him the “best defender in the world”.

“For me, he is the best defender in the world right now,” Messi told reporters after the game. “Amazing performance tonight, man of the match.”

Praise of that level from the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner should not be taken lightly, but not everyone was in agreement with the little Magician.

Taking to Twitter, one user wrote: “Martinez is better, Saliba too, Varane also & many more.”

“Saliba plays golf???”, another joked.

“Not even the best at Tottenham”, a third exclaimed.

However, others were quick to agree with Messi, with one fan tweeting: “He is absolutely spot on, there is no CB itw as good as Romero is.”

“Messi knows what he’s talking about! Romero is a beast,” another remarked.

Enzo Fernandez also agreed with Messi, commenting on Romero’s Instagram post after the game. The Chelsea midfielder said: “The best central in the world.”

While compatriot and Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez commented: “You’re crazy”, alongside a clapping emoji.

Romero was quick to return the favour after the match, with the 25-year-old heaping praise on Messi.

“Ecuador were strong at the back and tried to exploit any mistakes we made,” he said. “But then, the greatest player in the world appeared and opened the game up, after that, things got easier.”

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni was also lost for words to describe Romero’s performance after the game, stating: “I have no words for match Cuti Romero had.”

“During the home games, people motivate him and he thinks he’s a He-Man, he can run 70 metres. He is an impressive centre-back, he played an incredible game”
