The Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise was supposed to play the protagonist in Edward Scissorhands. During an interview with the media outlet ScreenRant, screenwriter Caroline Thompson spoke about what led to Tom Cruise losing out on the role. She said-

“[Tom] wanted to know how Edward went to the bathroom! He was asking the kind of questions about the character that can’t be asked for this character! Part of the delicacy of the story was not answering questions like, ‘How does he go to the bathroom? How did he live without eating all those years?’ Tom Cruise was certainly unwilling to be in the movie without those questions being answered.”

“If the right thing was around, sure… I think with anybody, you just, I never work with anybody even with my friends, it’s not like a party so I always would like to try it with him or anybody to kind of go; what is the part? What is the thing? And then is it the right thing, is it the right character? I take things on those basis and no others.”
