Denzel Washington has been married to his wife for more than 35 years and proved that some relationships in Hollywood are capable of lasting.

In an interview with People, the 63-year-old actor revealed exactly what it has taken in order for his marriage to survive the harshness of being in the limelight.

‘I do what I’m told, keep my mouth shut,’ Denzel joked with the magazine. He and his wife Pauletta, who have four children together, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in June.

But John David wasn’t always pegged to take up acting for his career after he signed on with NFL’s St. Louis Rams in 2006 as a running back for the team.

When People asked Denzel if he was sad his son gave up a career as a footballer to become an actor, the father gave a response that many parents probably relate to.

‘He’s had I don’t know how many concussions, a broken collarbone, torn up knee and Achilles tendon, so no, I’m glad it’s over,’ Denzel said.

Denzel has reprised his role as retired CIA agent Robert McCall in his most recent film, The Equalizer 2.

Despite his decades-long career, this is the first time the actor has done a sequel for any of his movies.
