They were exchanging blows on an equal level, and after some time, Garp was beginning to get the upper hand. But suddenly, Shiryu used his invisible Devil Fruit and inflicted a fatal injury on him.

The injury made him weaker, allowing Aokiji to use his Devil Fruit powers to impale Monkey D.
