LeBron James doesn’t need Twitter’s verification to cement his place as one of sports all-time greats… and it’s just as well.

The Lakers star revealed on Friday that he won’t pay the $8 fee that is being introduced on the social media platform for a blue tick, meaning he is now set to lose his verified status.

He wrote on his account: ‘Welp guess my blue tick will be gone soon cause if you know me I ain’t paying the five.’

James incorrectly thought it would cost him five dollars but it is actually eight – and the feature, which is called ‘Twitter Blue’ is already available for users who are willing to pay for it.

Users with a blue tick who don’t subscribe will lose their blue checkmarks on Saturday, April 1.

But for the 38-year-old James, his Twitter status is just a minor distraction while the Lakers look to make the NBA playoffs.

They are currently ninth in the Western Conference standings and are back in action Later on Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

There are six games remaining in the regular season for the Lakes to force a way into the top eight and keep their season alive.

The Timberwolves are a place above the Lakers in the Western Conference, their 39=38 record narrowly eclipsing the Lakers on 38-38.

James has been struggling with a tendon issue in his foot and is listed as questionable for the must-win game.

Forbes ranked James’s wealth at $1billion last June, citing $385m in wages he has been paid and around $900m from his investments.
