ITV viewers have slammed the channel for airing ‘woke’ and ‘hypocritical’ celebrity messages during the National Lottery’s New Year’s Eve Big Bash on Sunday.

The pre-recorded programme, which was presented by Alesha Dixon and Jason Manford, featured a number of performances from Busted, Take That and Becky Hill.

But some were not happy after a two-minute clip played where a variety of stars talked about the dangers of climate change.

The video included messages from Idris Elba and Olivia Colman and Hollywood stars Glenn Close and Woody Harrelson speaking about the need for urgent action to save our planet.

Several ITV viewers were left less than impressed and claimed that New Year’s Eve was not the time for ‘woke’ messaging, or being ‘lectured’ by wealthy jet-setting celebrities.

Idris was seen telling viewers that ‘global warming, climate change and the devastating loss of biodiversity are the greatest threats humanity has ever faced. We are in the midst of an ecological crisis.’

Olivia added that ‘we know exactly what needs to be done. We have the knowledge, the tools and the money. We lack only the will.’

Taking to X – formerly known as Twitter – one wrote: ‘Here we go, filthy rich w****** lecturing the plebs on climate change’.

A second said: ‘Just what we want on new years eve, a load of weathly celebs lecturing us on climate change whilst they live in mansions and fly in private jets #NYEBigBash

‘Another woke-fest yet again’.

‘Dear @ITV . We’ve tuned into this NYE show to listen to some music not to listen to a virtue signal on the climate! Please bore off!’

Another penned: ‘Talking about the environment…who cares on NYE’.

‘Turned on @ITV to see the National Lottery NYE Big Bash pushing the climate scam in all it’s glory! Turned off and party music now turned on!!’

While another agreed: ‘It’s NYE ffs. Have a day off.’
