Drake became the latest victim in the apparent trend of spending ridiculous amounts of money on concert tickets, only to throw things at the artist.

Now, throwing things at musicians is unfortunately not a new phenomenon. There’s even an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to instances of “bottling” or “concert abuse,” harking back to the ’70s, but it’s worth noting that the older examples tend to be at festivals rather than the artists’ own shows.

To give you an idea of where I’m coming from, my hometown festival shows up on that list 11 times.

However, in a post-pandemic era of social media, instances of people throwing things at artists on stage have attracted a ton of attention. And for good reason, as it’s incredibly dangerous: Country singer Kelsea Ballerini was hit in the eye with a bracelet during a show in Idaho just last week.

Enter Drake, who began his It’s All a Blur tour with 21 Savage in Chicago last night. According to a TikTok filmed at the event, someone threw a phone at him:

Unfortunately, not all are so lucky — last month, Bebe Rexha required stitches when a man threw his phone at her, reportedly telling police that he thought “it would be funny.”

In short, maybe some people should spend their hard-earned cash on holding on to their phones and staying home.
