Owen Wilson is extremely respected in the film industry and is an individual who has made a name for himself as a versatile actor. He has been in massive projects like Disney’s Cars, Night at the Museum, and Marley & Me, as well as becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as Mobius in the Disney+ series, Loki.
In an interview with The A.V. Club, Wilson looked back at some interesting moments in his acting career, including his 1996 movie, The Cable Guy, where he starred alongside Jim Carrey and Leslie Mann.
Owen Wilson’s Experience Getting Beaten Up By Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy
Owen Wilson was part of an iconic scene in The Cable Guy which started off with him being a bad date for Leslie Mann’s character and ultimately ended with him getting beaten up by Jim Carrey’s character in the bathroom. Wilson talked about his experience shooting this scene, stating that the date part with Mann was much more fun for him as an actor compared to being beaten up by Jim Carrey.
Owen Wilson
“I would say I had more fun on the scene with Leslie Mann where I’m sort of the obnoxious date. I’d say that was more fun to film that than the other scene [in the bathroom fighting Jim Carrey’s character]. There’s not much improvising to do when you’re just getting beaten up by Jim Carrey. Maybe that’s why it wasn’t that much fun to do.” He added, “But I think having maybe not having trained as an actor—but having a background as a writer—that is one thing that I’ve felt I can easily contribute, in coming up with some lines that could be good.” He continued.
The actor joked about how there was not a lot of room to improvise while he was being beaten up by Carrey and contemplated that that could be the reason why the scene was not as enjoyable for him. He then went on to say that he feels that he can better contribute to his lines due to his background as a writer.
The Cable Guy Was One Of Owen Wilson’s First Roles
During this interview, Owen Wilson revealed that while filming the 2016 movie Zoolander 2, he and Ben Stiller looked back at one of Wilson’s first roles, which happened to be with Jim Carrey and Stiller himself in The Cable Guy. Wilson revealed that this role was his first, after many auditions for different projects.
Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller
“When I was just working on Zoolander [2], Ben was remembering me doing that scene. I remember that was the only movie that I auditioned for that I got the part. And I didn’t know—obviously couldn’t know at the time—that would be the first of I don’t know how many movies that Ben and I worked on together.” He mentioned.
The two also reminisced about the movie being the first of their many on-screen appearances together. Wilson and Stiller have been in a number of movies together, including Night at the Museum franchise, the Zoolander movies, Meet The Parents, and Little Forkers to name a few.
