Tom Brady’s first Patriots conference call has been unearthed by the team, and the sixth-round pick’s humility was on full display as he spoke with reporters.

Taken 199th overall out of MichiganBrady was expected to serve as a backup to starter Drew Bledsoe.

‘All’s I was looking for was just a place to get my foot in the door and try to be great for the team that picked me,’ Brady can be heard saying in the call.

‘And Drew Bledsoe is certainly one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and it’s gonna be great to learn under him and compete for a job as a Patriot

Brady backed Bledsoe up for a year before an injury to the incumbent gave him the chance to seize the starting job for good.

23 years later, Brady would retire after a storied NFL career that included seven Super Bowl wins, 15 Pro Bowl appearances and three MVP awards.

But as a rookie, he was just looking for a chance to prove his talents.

‘The team that has drafted me I’m just very comfortable with, and whether it be in the second round or the sixth round, I think everyone starts on the same level,’ he said.

‘Certainly this is a great step for me, it’s gonna be a great challenge. But I think I’m ready for it – actually, I know I’m ready.

Brady was even asked if baseball was off the table for him, as he was selected by the now-defunct Montreal Expos as a catcher in the 1995 amateur baseball draft.

But the quarterback made it clear his future was in future.

Brady was also asked if he was aware the Patriots had selected another quarterback – Michael Bishop – the year prior in the seventh round. His answer was respectful but confident.

‘I’ve always really concerned myself with the things I can do, and I don’t put a whole lot of thinking into the other guys because I know I’m not really at best when I’m not controlling and playing as well as I possibly can,’ he said.

It’s safe to say he played quite well for the Patriots – and later the Bucs too.
