Tom Brady knows how special an NFL MVP award is, and just how hard it is to win one. Despite winning seven Super Bowls throughout his 23-year career, Brady only won three regular season MVPs.

Despite some statistically huge seasons, Brady had plenty of competition from other quarterbacks like Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. There were also three running backs who won the award while Brady was playing: Shaun Alexander, LaDainian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson.

A non-QB hasn’t won the award since 2012, but Brady believes a running back should win it this season: he’s backing Christian McCaffrey as his favorite.

It’s a different team with some different opportunities and they’ve been really dynamic on offense. So he is definitely in my mind the MVP favorite and according to his quarterback too, Brock Purdy, who says some amazing things about him… With the offseason that the running backs have, do you kind of feel like an award like that would be pretty nice?

Brady made the comments on his Let’s Go! podcast, in which McCaffrey was featured during the episode. CMC thanked Brady and then expanded on the devaluing of their position that running backs have had to deal with over the past few years.

I appreciate you saying that, man. That means a lot… I just think even being in the conversation is an honor, and specifically for that reason and the timing of it with running backs… Every position other than a couple at some point has kind of had their dips as far as the market goes, and part of it is just fighting against the franchise tag and fighting against different things going on around the league.

Brady joins San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in championing for McCaffrey to win the award. Purdy is currently the odds-on favorite following yet another multi-touchdown game.

It’s possible the Niners will have the MVP (Purdy) and Offensive Player of the Year (McCaffrey) once it’s all said and done.
