To resurrect the dying MCU, Marvel Studio is planning to bring back some fan-favorite characters.
All the way back in 2008, the world was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was the Robert Downey Jr. starrer Iron Man that set the ball rolling for one of the most successful movie franchises in history. It did not take long for fans to get glued to the story. They fell in love with the characters. And bam! There was no turning back. But times have changed. A decade and a half down the line, the MCU seems to be staring down a barrel. And Kevin Feige and co. might have a trick up their sleeve to resurrect it.
The Rise of Marvel
Everyone loved the OG Avengers
The initial success of the MCU was built on the back of an ensemble of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johannsson, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner. Each of them had their own flaws, their own quirks. And that is what made them lovable.
Their rapport made the fans fall in love with the Avengers immediately. As years passed by, more heroes joined the rumble for the big fight against Thanos. The Infinity Saga culminated in 2019, marking an end to one of the most loved arcs in modern history.
Marvel Cinematic Universe at the Crossroads
The fall in standards is a headache for Kevin Feige
Almost 5 years have passed since the release of Avengers: Endgame. 9 MCU films have hit theatres since then. And things have not gone to plan ever since. Anyone who has kept up with the franchise knows that the standards have dropped. The old magic is not there anymore. Ratings have dropped down. Profits have plummeted.
Marvel Studios celebrates its annual retreat in Palm Springs. For a healthy part of the 21st century, it was an occasion to revel in their achievements. It wasn’t the same this time around. The Johnathan Majors controversy fails to die down. The shows have failed to have the impact everyone expected them to have. And the men in charge are ready to take up drastic solutions to deal with the problem.
Is a return for these Marvel stars on the cards?
One Marvel executive recommended bringing Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. back
Modern problems require modern solutions. But Marvel seems to be going for an old one. A member of the studio floated an idea to revive Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. That is what happens when your backs are against the wall.
The comic book faithful know that it is not impossible. It is common for killed-off characters to return in the comics. But fans should not get their hopes high just yet. It would be too utopian an idea that they could meet RDJ’s wage, which was $25 million for Iron Man 3 itself. Seems like fans of the Oppenheimer star will not have the chance to witness their favorite star in their favorite role.
Marvel Studios need another solution, and they need it fast.
