Florence Pugh has already made a place of herself in Hollywood and fans’ hearts all due to her impeccable acting talent. From making her debut in 2014, she quickly rose to international attention with her portrayals in films like Fighting with My Family, Midsommar, and Little Women. One thing that made her a successful actor is her dedication to her craft which has often gone quite too far.
For an actor, portraying a character is never easy as they live like them for months before leaving it completely to move on to another one and the saga continues. However, Pugh revealed having a hard time letting go of her character, Dani in Ari Aster’s horror movie. It was because she had gone to extreme lengths to get into it.
Florence Pugh Went Quite Too Far for Her Midsommar Role
Florence Pugh in Midsommar
Florence Pugh has shocked many with her role of Dani in 2019’s Midsommar since her character was complex due to the situations she was surrounded in. From a toxic relationship to the horrifying situation she was in, it all summed up the intense grief her character carried. It was the reason why she had a hard time letting go of it after the film wrapped up. She told in an Off Menu podcast interview:
“When I did it, I was so wrapped up in her and I’ve never had this ever before with any of my characters. There were so many places that I had to go to. I’d never played someone that was in that much pain before, and I would put myself in really sh-t situations that maybe other actors don’t need to do, but I would just be imagining the worst things.”
She went quite far to even abuse herself during the process of letting go of it.
“Each day the content would be getting more weird and harder to do. I was putting things in my head that were getting worse and more bleak. I think by the end I probably, most definitely abused my own self in order to get that performance.”
While one would think that the actress went through this extreme maybe because she was associated with the project, her Marvel co-star, Will Poulter was living proof that this film is a real deal.
Will Poulter Was Left Terrified by Florence Pugh’s Midsommar
Will Poulter who played the role of Adam Warlock in James Gunn’s The Guardians of the GalaxyVol. 3 shared his views about the film to Independent. Talking about the eerie part of the film, he shared,
“I’ve got to say that being out in the sun at Glastonbury and seeing the odd person with flowers in their hair did trip me out a bit.”
He found the movie disturbing as he continued,
“What you come to terms with pretty quickly is that there aren’t ghouls or goblins in Midsommar; everything that is horrifying comes from a very organic place and all the terrible things that happen are enacted by humans on humans. That’s really quite disturbing to me.”
The folk horror film delves deep into human relationships as it revolves around a group of friends embarking on their journey to an ancestral Swedish village in a remote location for a midsummer festival which gets eerie turning the pleasant moments into something one would have least expected.
It grossed $48 million and is available to watch on Hulu.
