Jason Momoa’s Aquaman 2 fails to make a big splash at the box office.

Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was released on December 22, 2023. The film is set to be the final film in the DCEU before James Gunn’s reboot in 2025. The film was not expected to open as big as other tentpole films as there was less anticipation about the film as fans were ready to move on to the new phase of DC.

Aquaman 2 was released recently amidst low fanfare and anticipation as the current phase of the DCU comes to an end. The discourse around the film before its release was more on the behind-the-scenes drama of the film rather than the actual plot of the film. It felt like most fans were ready to move on from the film and were more interested in James Gunn’s reboot of the IP.

The film was released on December 22, 2023, and now the box office reports of the film over the weekend have come out. As put by Discussing Films. the film only managed to earn $28 million over the weekend (3-day collection) at the domestic box office. This makes it the second lowest-opening DCU film ever, only above Blue Beetle which opened at only $25 million (according to Variety).

Audiences outside the states seem to have more love for the Jason Momoa-starrer as the film managed to earn $108 million worldwide (As put by Discussing Films). However, this is still a very low number considering its $205 million production budget. It remains to be seen how the film fares over the weekdays and whether it manages to become a hit.

Aquaman 2 seems to be the final film of Jason Momoa as the titular character. DC Studios Co-CEO Peter Safran recently talked about Momoa’s contribution to the character and how fans have responded to the character over the years. He also expressed his openness about the future of Momoa as Aquaman in the DCU’s future. Safran told The Independent,
“What I hope is that people will really be here to support him on this journey. If it’s the end of the journey, fine. If it goes on, that’s also fine, but I think it has meant so much to him. The way [director] James [Wan] crafted this second film, it feels like a very complete story when you watch the two films together. We’ll see what happens with him beyond it. I know that Jason will always have a home at DC, and at Warner Bros.”
It was rumored that Momoa would be playing Lobo in James Gunn’s new DCU. Fans have to wait and see how this new DCU shapes up and whether Momoa returns in any capacity in the future to the franchise.
