Rob McElhenney shocked fans with an Instagram photo marking his memories of 2023.

The Welcome To Wrexham star shared a photo of himself looking completely unrecognisable as he told fans about his year which included a ‘slight allergic reaction.’

Alongside photos with his It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-star and snaps from his time at Wrexham AFC with Ryan Reynolds, the actor uploaded a shocking photo of his deformed face.

‘Aside from that slight allergic reaction to the nuts, 2023 was one of the best years of my life,’ he wrote. ‘Thank you to the people and places that made it possible. My life is full of love and joy because of you. So excited for 2024. I’ll stay away from the nuts.’

The post left his followers begging him to explain if the photo was real while the star’s friend, the comedian Mindy Kaling told him: ‘Rob this made me almost drop my phone. My son screamed.’

Another follower commented: ‘Can somebody confirm that the first picture is real and not from some scene he was doing. That is insane.’

Rob managed to fool his followers as the photo was actually a behind the scenes shot from the set of his hit sitcom.

The actor’s appearance was the result of some impressive prosthetic’s used for an episode during the It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s 16th series, which sees Rob’s character Mac suffer a major reaction to peanuts.

Rob shared more memories from the year, including photos from a bar trip with Prince Harry and times shared from his regular trips to Wrexham.

Last month it was announced that Rob’s hit show Welcome to Wrexham had been officially renewed for a third series.

Disney+ announced that the Emmy nominated hit docuseries will return for series three in the spring of 2024.

The series follows the efforts of Hollywood stars Rob and Ryan Reynolds to return Wrexham AFC to glory.

Since the duo have taken over as co-chairman, the club has gone from the fifth tier National League to League Two in the Football League.

Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment, said: ‘The wild global success of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is a testament to the courage and vision of Rob and Ryan, the dogged spirit of the Red Dragons, and the hope and devotion of the people of Wrexham.

‘It’s a story that has only begun to be told and one that everyone can continue to follow along with in the third season.

‘Our thanks to the creative team who captured these thrilling moments and everyone who achieved what seemed impossible only a short time ago.’

Deadpool actor Ryan, 47, and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Rob, 46, teamed up to buy the football team in 2021 after the Welsh club went into administration.

Wrexham is the third oldest professional football club in the world, but hadn’t been in the Football League in over 15 years.

Ryan and Rob recognised the potential for a real underdog story and with their investment and marketing, they helped promote it both literally and figuratively.

Speaking to Variety, the pair said they didn’t know what to expect when visiting the Welsh town, but decided that they would turn the focus of the series towards Wrexham and its people.
