Speaking to Mike Greenberg on ESPN’s Greeny podcast, Brees admitted he had received some calls regarding a potential comeback “the year after I retired (2021).”

However, those calls came to nothing as Brees said: “I don’t throw with my right arm anymore. My right arm does not work.

“So, when I throw in the backyard right now, I throw left-handed. I can play pickleball just because it’s below the waist, but anything above my shoulders I’ve got a hard time.

“It’s definitely a result of the injury that I suffered when I left San Diego, the dislocated right shoulder, and all that I thought I might never play again.

“So, that kind of put me on the fast track to a degenerative shoulder and all kinds of arthritic changes and stuff like that.”

That being said, Brees also admitted: “If I could I would absolutely still be playing.”

The injury occurred in the San Diego Chargers’ 2005 season-ending loss to the Denver Broncos.

Speaking at the National Athletic Trainers’ Association convention in 2018, as per NOLA.com, Brees explained: “Dislocated right shoulder. Probably the worst thing that could ever happen to a quarterback.

“The next thing I think, it’s probably the last time I ever put on a Charger uniform, and then it registers, it might be the last time I ever put on a football uniform of any significance.”

It turned out he had not only dislocated his throwing arm but also torn his labrum and partially torn his rotator cuff.

Brees subsequently underwent surgery which got his career back on track.

That offseason he signed for the New Orleans Saints, where he would go on to spend the remaining fifteen seasons of his career.

Brees retired having won Super Bowl MVP, the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year twice, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year while also reaching the Pro Bowl thirteen times.
