Warren Sapp also cited a defensive legend as the source of Bill Belichick’s success

AS the pressure continues to rise on Bill Belichick, an NFL Hall of Famer has launched a scathing attack on the coach.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend Warren Sapp, 50, has accused the New England Patriots head coach of riding the coattails of legendary players throughout his career.

Appearing on Fearless With Jason Whitlock, Sapp accused Belichick of arrogance, citing Spygate and cheating accusations among other instances.

He then went on to say: “Tom Brady is the reason why you’re Bill Belichick. Lawrence Taylor is the reason why you’re Bill Belichick.

“Maybe the greatest football player on offense and maybe the greatest football player on defense to ever be in the National Football League.

“Bill, that’s who you owe that to. All of the ‘Patriot way’ bulls**t is out the window.

“Ask Bill O’Brien. Ask Romeo Crennell. Ask Josh McDaniels. Ask any of them. It’s out the window.”

Taylor and Belichick won two Super Bowls together with the New York Giants while the latter was LT’s defensive coordinator.

As for Brady, he won six Super Bowls with Belichick during their two decades together in New England.

And amidst rumors of Belichick potentially leaving after this season for another team, Sapp was clearly convinced this was doomed to fail.

“And you can’t go recreate it somewhere else because no one cares about it,” he said, adding: “No one respects that but you and the old-school football guys.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Sapp then told Belichick: “It’s time to go to the couch, the game is over.”

But while Sapp may feel Belichick’s best days are behind him, it seems this might not dissuade some teams from giving him a chance.

Both the Washington Commanders and the Los Angeles Chargers have been heavily linked with the 71-year-old of late.

This all comes as the Patriots continue to struggle, sitting bottom of the AFC East at 2-8.

Since Brady left for the Buccaneers in March 2020, New England has reached the playoffs just once.

By comparison, with Brady under center, they missed the postseason just twice in nineteen seasons.

As for Sapp’s concerns about the “Patriots way” having run its course, these were seemingly backed up by former New England star Rob Gronkowski during a recent interview.

Appearing on Up And Adams, the four-time Super Bowl champion said: “The culture was set definitely with coach Belichick, but Tom Brady exemplified that culture to another level to make it work.”

Gronkowski also admitted while on the FS1 show that things would never quite be the same without Brady.

He said: “Brady was the meat. He was the ringer in that organization, no doubt about it, from A to Z.

“From the way to represent yourself on the field, to the way to represent yourself off the field, it just fit the mold for everyone else to fall in place.

“And without Tom, I saw that it was going to trickle down and not work anymore.”
