Fans have accused the NFL of racial bias over the discrepancy in coverage Simone Biles and Taylor Swift have received during games (@simonebiles/Instagram, @taylorswift/Instagram)
GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN: Simone Biles made an appearance to support her husband during his football game in Green Bay on October 29. While fans were happy to see the couple together, some pointed out that they haven’t received as much media attention as Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, and wondered why.
Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, met on a dating app in 2020.
Owens has been a great support to Biles, especially after she decided to withdraw from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to prioritize her mental health.
When the couple started dating, Owens was a member of the Houston Texans practice squad, but he was later promoted to the main roster in 2021.
During his time with the Houston Texans, Biles would often attend Owens’ games to show her support. She even appeared in an NFL hype video for the 2022-23 season, donning Texans attire.
However, things have now changed since Owens signed with the Green Bay Packers this year.
Jonathan Owens and Simone Biles’ relationship
Owens and Biles, who tied the knot in April, are currently in a long-distance relationship due to their busy careers.
In July this year, Biles said on her Instagram story, “Long distance is tough and both being professional athletes is hard…for our schedules…”
During an interview with Today on October 19, Biles stated that her season had come to an end and she planned to spend her time supporting her husband in Green Bay.
True to her word, the most decorated gymnast of all time made her debut appearance at a regular-season Packers game to show her support for Owens.
All eyes on Swift
Regular fans have noted that the televised broadcast didn’t give enough camera time to the Olympian, making it difficult for viewers to know if she was even present at the venue or not.
Some have compared the coverage of her performance to the amount of screen time that Swift has received during this football season in just the last few weeks.
The attention of the league and its cameras was directed at the hitmaker after she was spotted at a Kansas City Chiefs game on September 24 this year.
Since then, the media has been constantly following the pop singer and her boyfriend Travis Kelce, with both sports and celebrity outlets covering their every move.
They even made an appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live’ after being seen together in New York.
Some fans have suggested that racial bias in the media has prevented Biles and her husband from receiving the same level of attention as Travis and Taylor.
Meanwhile, others have attributed the discrepancy to the difference in clout between Owens and Kelce.
For reference, Jonathan Owens’ Green Bay Packers are historically one of the weaker-performing teams in the league, while the Kansas City Chiefs are a Super Bowl-contending team with Kelce being their star performer and a future Hall of Famer.
‘Simone Biles should get just as much hype as Taylor Swift’
Owens and Kelce will face each other on December 3 as the Chiefs head to Lambeau Field, but that might not be the only marquee matchup.
During her interview on ‘Today’, Biles let it be known that she will be in attendance, so there is a big possibility that fans will see Biles and Swift in the same stadium supporting their men.
X users have expressed their thoughts surrounding the television coverage time the respective spouses in attendance have received.
One user said, “Dear @NFL since y’all was so giddy showing Taylor Swift’s long backcrack ass every time the Chiefs play home games, then you should be just as excited to show off Simone Biles at Packers home games.”
