Kelly Clarkson accused her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock of telling her The Voice would not want her as a judge because she was not sexually desirable enough.

According to Kelly, Brandon made the remarks while he was not only her husband but was also working as her professional manager.

She leveled the allegation at her ex while testifying to a California labor commissioner last year, when she and Brandon were locked in a legal wrangle over money in the wake of their rancorous divorce.

Now new details of Kelly’s testimony have surfaced in a report from the New York Post, which cites the relevant court documents.

In Kelly’s version of events, she spent years expressing her desire to be a coach on The Voice, only for Brandon to dash her hopes, saying that NBC executives were uninterested in her and were ‘looking for a more sex symbol type’ such as Rihanna.

Kelly asserted that Brandon told her NBC would prefer a choice like Rihanna not only because she was ‘someone sexy’ but because the network ‘had to have someone that was black. … They had to have a diverse thing.’

To hear Kelly tell it, Brandon also said that Kelly was ‘too similar’ to Blake Shelton, who at that point was one of the coaches on The Voice.

Her attorney asked how she managed to remember that exchange with Brandon, prompting Kelly to reply: ‘Well, a wife doesn’t forget a time she gets told she’s not a sex symbol, so that stays.’

This past November, the California labor commissioner ordered Brandon to return $2,641,374 to Kelly on the grounds he had overcharged her.

The labor commissioner ruled that Brandon had overstepped his bounds as his manager by booking jobs for her that only her agents were entitled to acquire – one of those gigs being The Voice.

Kelly had a long professional history with The Voice, beginning from when she appeared as an advisor to Blake all the way back in 2012.

She ultimately did join the program as a full-time coach in 2018 and left at the end of 2021, only to return to the panel in early 2023.

The alleged ‘sex symbol’ comments came to light just after it emerged Kelly had made her final $115k spousal support payment to Brandon.

A source told Us Weekly about the 41-year-old singer: ‘Kelly is feeling relieved that her spousal support to Brandon has come to an end.

‘She’s been ready for this for a while now and is so happy her payments to Brandon will be complete. It’s so nice knowing that this chapter of her life can close with the new year.’

The person close to Clarkson added that ‘Kelly’s looking at this as a fresh start and she couldn’t be happier for a clean slate in 2024.’

The former couple met in 2006 and had been married for almost seven years when the pop star filed for divorce from Blackstock, 47, in June 2020.

Following the finalization of their divorce in 2022, Clarkson was ordered to pay $45k a month in child support for their kids — daughter River, nine, and son Remington, seven.

Blackstock also received $115,000 a month in spousal support until this January.

In November 2023, a California labor commissioner ruled Blackstock ‘unlawfully’ booked jobs for Clarkson, including inking her deal as a judge on The Voice, while employed as her manager, as only agents can secure roles for talent, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.

Blackstock also collected fees for other endorsements, like Wayfair and Norwegian Cruise Line, in the amount of $2,641,374, per the outlet.

The labor commissioner ordered Blackstock to return the commissions — which includes the $1.98 million for The Voice gig — to his ex-wife.

It was reported that Blackstock’s legal team plans to appeal the decision.

In October Clarkson opened up about her decision to leave The Voice as one of its four celebrity coaches after nine seasons.

Balancing hosting duties for The Kelly Clarkson Show along with The Voice over the past several years began to feel unmanageable, she told USA Today.

‘Full disclosure: I put on a smile a lot of those times because I was struggling a lot in my personal life,’ Kelly said of showing up for double duties.

She added, ‘I’ve learned a lot about what I’m capable of handling, and also what you should not handle. That was me saying “bye” to The Voice and having this big move. I love that family, but I was like, “I’m struggling. I can’t smile anymore. I don’t feel like smiling.”

‘What’s cool for me with season 5 is I am in such a great place, not only with my kids, but with me personally and with the show,’ she confessed.

‘I feel like a weight has lifted. That move was very needed,’ Clarkson emphasized.
