Kat Von D of LA Ink fame has shocked fans with her plans to completely cover up her body artwork with black ink – revealing that she has chosen not to undergo ‘extremely painful’ laser removal and instead simply ‘black out’ her skin.
The 41-year-old tattoo artist – who recently renounced witchcraft and the occult, and embraced Christianity – revealed on Instagram she that is in the process of ‘blacking out’ her body which has taken ’17 sessions and almost 40 accumulative hours’ thus far.
During the video, she showed off left side of her back which was covered entirely in black ink. The right side, meanwhile, still showed evidence of her old vine tattoo, which will eventually be concealed by black as well.
She then showed off some of the tools used to black out her skin as well as some footage of the process.

In June, her stomach wasn’t blacked out at all and her tattoo was perfectly visible
Kat, pictured while pregnant in 2018, gained fame as a tattoo artist on LA Ink and used to have an angel tattoo on her torso until she used black ink to conceal it
At the end of the video, she panned to the front side of her waist, which consisted of an angel tattoo that was mostly concealed by black ink.
She also displayed her arms, which have already been completely blacked out aside from a tattoo of a man’s face.
Kat used to have a woman dressed in vintage attire and roses tattooed along that whole arm.
’17 sessions, and almost 40 accumulative hours later, we are about 80 per cent done with blacking out my body,’ Kat penned along with the video.
‘I’ve been consistently flying out to Philly to get tattooed by the amazing @hoode215 at his lovely tattoo shop @blackvulturegallery.’
She also included a Q and A section in her caption to seemingly curb insensitive questions and comments from haters.
She also wrote, ‘Maybe before commenting any negativity, just remind yourself: What you consider ugly, might be beautiful to someone else.’
In the Q and A, she explained that the reason she chose not to just have the tattoos removed is because ‘laser is a slow (and extremely painful) process’ which ‘can take more than 10 sessions.’

She added that while she thinks ‘laser tattoo removal is effective, I personally wasn’t a good candidate considering how much coverage I wanted to remove.’
It is also common practice to tattoo white over black ink to make the concealment look more natural. However, Kat revealed she won’t be doing that as she ‘loves the simplicity of the black.’
As for why she is choosing to cover up her tattoos, she shared that they ‘represented a part of my life that no longer aligns with who I am today.’
She added: ‘Some people are fine with keeping these types of landmarks in time on them — I personally grew tired of waking up to them, and seeing those constant reminders every time I looked in a mirror.’
The decision to black out her tattoos comes after she unexpectedly converted to Christianity.

In October, she uploaded a professional video of her baptism.
She was joined by friends and family as she stood on stage wearing a white robe and stood in a large tank of water.
‘Katherine von Drachenberg, upon your profession of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in obedience to His Divine command, I baptize you, my sister, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,’ the pastor recited just before dunking her in the water.
The tattoo artist was shocked by all of the backlash she faced after uploading the video, especially from Christians.
Kat explained: ‘You would think all the hate would be coming from people who are against religion or against Christianity. It was really the Christians who were the worst.

Ceremony: The tattoo artist and former make-up mogul shared a video of the church ceremony attended by scores of her tattooed friends – with the clip captioned with a simple cross
‘It was really sad to see this critical display of judgment from Christians… because that isn’t Christ-like to judge people or judge people’s journey. You would think most Christians would be happy for you when you come to this point in your life, especially when you get baptized.’
She shared that she felt that the vitriol came from her appearance and gothic demeanor.
‘I think it’s really insane we live in a time where people still judge a book by its cover. I wasn’t aware that there’s a uniform you’re supposed to wear once you give your heart to Jesus,’ she explained.
‘There is a certain aesthetic that is a stereotypical aesthetic for the Christian community and that is not me. I don’t dress like that. At the same time, I would never judge you for how you look, so why would you judge me?’
She stunned fans when she first announced that she threw out her occult items amid a ‘spiritual battle taking place’ within her.
End of an era: The star opened up about her ‘spiritual battle’ and her desire to change her beliefs and lifestyle. She shared a post showing books on witchcraft, tarot and the occult she was throwing out
Built an empire: Kat has been known for her gothic and macabre signature style throughout her career; seen in September 2019
Sharing a post showing books on witchcraft and tarot she was throwing out, she wrote: ‘I don’t know if any of you have been going through changes in your lives right now, but in the last few years I’ve come to some pretty meaningful realizations — many of them revolving around the fact that I got a lot of things wrong in my past.
‘Today, I went through my entire library, and threw out books that just don’t align with who I am and who I want to be.
‘I’ve always found beauty in the macabre, but at this point, I just had to ask myself what is my relationship with this content? And the truth is, I just don’t want to invite any of these things into our family’s lives, even if it comes disguised in beautiful covers, collecting dust on my shelves.
‘In no way is this post designed to put anyone down if you’re into this stuff, because I think we are all on our own journey, and I love everyone regardless of where they might be at. But right now, it’s never been more clear to me that there is a spiritual battle taking place, and I want to surround myself and my family with love and light.
‘With that being said, I want to send extra love to everyone out there, and hope through some of these trying times, you are making meaningful changes in your life, too!
She shared a shot of herself with the text, ‘Goodbye California!’
Kat said she was planning on closing her ‘beloved tattoo shop’ in the wake of the move
Kat initially opened the tattoo shop in 2007 after appearing on the TLC reality show Miami Ink
A year before announcing her religious transition, she shared that she would be moving from LA to Indiana and shuttering her tattoo shop, High Voltage Tattoo.
‘As some of you know, we recently purchased a beautiful home on a bit of land in rural Indiana, and the more time we spend out there we realize we feel more at home there than we do here in LA,’ she had explained at the time in the caption.
‘After much thought, we have decided we will permanently be moving to Indiana at the end of this year,’ the star added.
‘We plan on selling our beautiful home here, and I will most likely open a private studio in Indiana once we are done with the house remodel there.’
She also explained why she made the decision to close down her shop.
‘I didn’t think it would make sense to keep it open if I wasn’t present, and aside from coming back to work on music with my band, we don’t plan on returning to LA very often,’ she penned.
She had opened doors to the popular tattoo parlor back in 2007.
