Robert Downey Jr. had some interesting comments to make on one of the finest DC movies ever made
Robert Downey Jr. starrer Iron Man laid the foundation for what now is known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The superhero franchise has since become one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood and is also credited for changing the industry in the process. And talking about Marvel’s rival franchise, the Iron Man actor once shared that he did not understand one of the highly acclaimed DC movies starring Christian Bale and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Robert Downey Jr. Did Not Understand The Dark Knight
Robert Downey Jr., known for portraying the Marvel superhero Iron Man in the MCU, has stated that he “didn’t get” Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. During a 2011 interview, he said that he felt “dumb” after watching the DC film.

He claimed that he was unable to understand or appreciate the complexity and depth of the storytelling and scriptwriting, claiming that it was not something he preferred to see in a movie. The Due Date star said in an interview with moviehole.net, as per Huff Post,
“My whole thing is that I saw The Dark Knight. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing.”
He further stated that he loved Nolan’s 2006 movie The Prestige but did not understand his DC film, claiming that it did not align with his personal interests. “This is so high-brow and so f*cking smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie,” he said in the interview.
Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy represents his dark vision of the comics and has been credited among the best DC movies. However, the filmmaker doesn’t seem too bothered by his comments, as the two collaborated for the 2023 biographical thriller Oppenheimer.
Robert Downey Jr. on If Christopher Nolan Directed The Avengers
Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Nolan were interviewed together several times while promoting the 2023 film Oppenheimer. During one such interview with Wired, the filmmaker was asked about his vision for The Avengers.

Having directed The Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan called the question “the multiverse conundrum” before he shared what he would have done with the movie. “There’d probably be a lot too much Tony Stark,” he said before telling the Iron Man actor, “You’d be running away with the movie a little bit.”
He then asked the actor if he would be ready to get on the real jetpacks, as the filmmaker chooses to minimize the use of CGI or special effects in his movies. Downey Jr. playfully answered his question, saying, “If Christopher Nolan had directed The Avengers, we’d still be shooting it,” causing the filmmaker to burst into laughter.
