From a screenplay composed by Thomas Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm, the Danish original film, Another Round, was a definitive marker of greatness that just worked to ensure the indomitable greatness of Mads Mikkelsen on the silver screen. Already a ferocious force to contend with, the actor has racked up an illustrious filmography across genres in Hollywood, including major antagonistic roles in Marvel and Warner Bros.’s Fantastic Beasts threequel film.

However, none have been as well-received and critically acclaimed as the Vinterberg film which gathered up a staggering 74 awards nominations and 54 wins, including the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2021. Now, the film is up for an English-language adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the remake.

Mads Mikkelsen Comments on the Another Round Remake

A highly contested idea from the start, the remake of Mads Mikkelsen’s Another Round is being subjected to brutal backlash and trolling from netizens from all over the globe. Essentially labeling the remake as something that nobody wants or even asked for in the first place, people have been cruelly lashing out at the inefficacy of the film’s Hollywood production when the Danish one can exist as a perfectly well-executed project without it having to be subjected to endless cinematic adaptations.

Mads Mikkelsen, star of the original film in an interview with Indie Wire, commented on the idea of the DiCaprio remake, claiming:
“I’m glad not to be part of it. This is what we did. Unlike theater, where you can do it one year and do it again a couple of years later, the little moments we do in films are happening right here and now — something interesting your fellow actor brings on set that day.

I would probably want to change these scenes again. It can never happen. It’s a tricky thing to replay the same character. It’s better off in someone else’s hands.”

The Danish black comedy-drama has been subjected to the idea of a remake ever since its Best Feature win at the 2021 Oscars. Leo DiCaprio’s Appian Way is in collaboration with Makeready, and Endeavor Content is gearing up to helm the film’s Hollywood adaptation.

Thomas Vinterberg Comments on the Remake of His Film

The Oscar-winning movie [titled Druk in Danish], released in 2020, explores the lives of four high school teachers who launch an experiment to determine and prove whether remaining in a constant state of drunkenness can effectively better their social lives. Even though alcoholism is portrayed at the center of the narrative, the deeper understanding of the film revolves around midlife crises and the extent to which a man’s philosophy to search for happiness can lead him down a path of conflicted and questionable awareness.

Speaking of the Hollywood remake, Thomas Vinterberg claims:
“It’s an interesting artistic thing to see something grow into different versions […] Asking the same actor to do a different interpretation could be a little bit confusing. But I won’t be the main creative force in this. That would have to be up to the people who end up doing it.”
And even though Mikkelsen wants no part in Druk’s Hollywood remake, Another Round’s award-winning director has claimed that the idea of DiCaprio leading the film to the silver screens is one that greatly piques his interest and that the Titanic actor’s involvement gives him sufficient reason to be “full of hope and curiosity about what they’re up to.”

Another Round is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
