Fans voiced their disappointment after a deleted scene from the 2014 film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 surfaced online.

For fans, the world of superhero movies has always been an exciting and magical place. These movies can take us to new worlds and inspire faith in the extraordinary and impossibly possible. But what happens when the strings of reality pull back these fanciful stories? Such was the case for die-hard fans when one deleted scene from Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would have taken Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker on a completely different narrative path.

The deleted scene revealed that Peter’s father was still alive, which deepened the meaning of the film’s opening and changed the narrative of his journey moving forward. The 2014 film was the follow-up to 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. The alternate ending (deleted) scene by Sony might have inspired a threequel. This heartbreaking drama was devastating for Garfield’s fans.

The Deleted Scene From Amazing Spider-Man 2 Gives Peter Parker a Happy Ending

Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man nearly saved Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy from falling in the climactic scene of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but ultimately failed to do so. After they had reconciled and made plans for the future, her death shocked Peter and caused him to wonder if being Spider-Man was worth the cost to him and his loved ones. His decision to put the suit back on makes sense in the big picture, but the movie presented it as rushed and lacking enough setup. The fact that Peter’s father is still alive would have sort of settled that.

If the extended cut of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was included in Marc Webb’s film, Peter would have the right motivation to assume the Spider-Man role once again after his father uttered the famous line (deleted scene):
“With great power comes great responsibility.”

It also meant that Peter would end the film on a marginally happier note. Thus, reuniting with his father would have brought the prematurely canceled franchise to a bittersweet conclusion. Garfield, 40, has earlier voiced concerns regarding studio meddling in the movie. He said, speaking with The Daily Beast, that he “genuinely loved” the original script, but “certain people at the studio [Sony Pictures] had problems with certain parts of it”.

This Alternate Ending Left Andrew Garfield Fans Heartbroken

In a six-minute YouTube video, Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker was shown deciding to end his career as a webslinger and dealing with the loss of his girlfriend. But as he was grieving at the cemetery, his father, Richard Parker, who had allegedly passed away, visited him. Peter appeared to be very shaken when he realized that his father was, in fact, still alive.

Many people have voiced their disappointment in the comments section, claiming that the scene should not have been removed from the 2014 film. A fan posted:
“I will never forgive Sony for hiding this masterpiece of a scene.”
Another expressed his profound disappointment by saying:
It will never fail to blow my mind on why they removed this, millions of people still don’t even know this exists! Powerful acting by Garfield.”
One said that scene gave the film a “complete” feeling, adding:
“It gives a purpose for all the research he did and all the time he spent trying to find Richard Parker. It makes the end of the movie more emotional than it already was..”

The “beautiful exchange” between the father and son stunned another fan:
“In all seriousness, words cannot describe how powerful this scene truly is. A beautiful exchange between father & son. I still can’t believe it was taken out of the final cut. Why Sony?! Why?!”
According to one, Peter most definitely deserved the third movie:
“The guy really deserved a 3rd movie. I’ve never seen this until now and they shouldn’t of cut this. I feel like he needed this and I really hope we see him in no way home.”

Garfield will next appear as Tobias in We Live in Time, an upcoming romantic drama film directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Payne. Florence Pugh, Adam James, and Marama Corlett will also appear in the Film4 Productions films.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is streaming on Disney Plus.
