In a new cover story for Variety Magazine, Doja Cat talks about her viral fashion looks, possibly dipping into the Punk genre, and how she’s able to live her best life while being in a world filled with a bunch of trolls.

The interview kicked off on the topic of Doja’s unique hairstyles. The superstar shaved her head off back in August, which led to social media users instantly comparing her to Britney Spears. While Doja simply explained at the time that she “never liked having hair,” which is why she cut it — trolls automatically assumed she was spiraling or going through a mental breakdown.

They were wrong and Doja is reminding people how rude it is to make those assumptions while also coming to Spears’ defense. She told Variety: “It’s so incredibly disrespectful for people to be minimizing what Britney went through and make a joke out of something that was very serious and a big deal in her life. Every time I see a comment like that, I can’t compute what’s happening, other than it’s just an awful thing,” Doja says. She added,

“But other than that, when I shaved my eyebrows off and I shaved my head, I remember thinking, ‘Get this shit off of me,’ because I needed to change something,” she says. “I wasn’t working out and wasn’t really taking care of myself in the way that I wanted to. I was like, ‘I need to do something,’ so I just chopped it all off. And I could see the shape of my head. I could see my whole face. I can see my ears, now that I don’t have a wig that’s glued to my forehead.”

Doja said she still wears wig and the process is much easier since she shaved off her head: “I still wear wigs, and they look better now because I don’t have so much hair under them, braided with grease and glue buildup because I wouldn’t wash my hair for two or three weeks at a time. Now I have a fucking hair hat — a shake-and-go — and I just slap it on and it’s cute and I look like a little ‘Pulp Fiction’ girl.” She laughs.

How Does She Handle The Endless Amount Of Trolls

Doja said she’s actually pretty good at it! Speaking with Variety she added, “A lot of people think I’m not good at handling trolls because I respond to them. But that’s the art of it: I love to go to f*cking war with trolls. That’s just what I’ve grown up with; I’ve been on the internet for 1,000 fucking years and it’s just part of me: that I need to respond. People think, ‘Oh, if you’re defending yourself, you’re weak.’ But I always rest on ‘Everyone can suck my d*ck from the back.’” She hesitates, peers into the camera and says, “I don’t know if you want to write that down.” Oh, consider it written. “If somebody wants to fight me on the internet,” she continues, “I will gladly join in, balls to the wall. It’s fun for me. I’m a very messy b*tch.”

Further into the interview, Doja talks about music and possibly jumping into the Punk Genre.
