Britney Spears broke her silence on the double-denim outfits she and Justin Timberlake rocked in 2001.

The ‘Toxic’ hitmaker and the NSYNC member — who were dating at the time — attended the American Music Awards in coordinated chambray ensembles and the head-to-toe look has now become an iconic part of pop culture sartorial history.

The singer, 41, recalled the moment she suggested the look to her stylist in her new memoir The Woman in Me, claiming she presented it as a joke.

‘I still can’t believe that Justin was going to wear denim and I said, “We should match! Let’s do denim-on-denim!”‘ Britney wrote.

‘At first, honestly, I thought it was a joke,’ she continued. ‘I didn’t think my stylist was actually going to do it, and I never thought Justin was going to do it with me. But they both went all in.’

She then recalled her stylist bringing in the ‘all-denim outfit’.

‘When he put it on, I thought, Whoa! I guess we’re really doing this!’

During that period, the pop star had recently risen to fame, while Justin was a global heartthrob leading the boy band NSYNC. Throughout their relationship from 1998 to 2002, they made joint appearances at numerous red carpet events.

‘Justin and I were always going to events together,’ Britney added in her book. ‘We had so much fun doing the Teen Choice Awards, and we often color-coordinated our outfits. But with the matching denim, we blew it up.’

She also commented on the scrutiny Justin endured for the denim delight.

‘I’ve heard Justin get flak for the look. On one podcast where they were teasing him about it, he said, “You do a lot of things when you’re young and in love.” And that’s exactly right. We were giddy, and those outfits reflected that,’ Britney wrote.

She added: ‘I get that it was tacky — but it was also pretty great in its own way, and I’m also happy to see it parodied as a Halloween costume.’

The pop icon said it happened while trying to get escape the fallout from her failed relationship with Justin in 2002.

She wrote that she skipped town and took a drive in Arizona to clear her mind following her abortion and breakup with the N-Sync member when the paranormal experience occurred.

While driving through the desert in a convertible with a friend, the ‘Toxic’ hitmaker was hit with the mystic moment, writing ‘an eerie feeling settled over me’.

She later described it as ‘a profound beauty, otherworldly and humbling’.
