The reason they’re still together after all this time could be an act of fate. After all, the universe was seemingly trying to bring them together long before they tied the knot.

They actually met in 1987 when Harvey was performing at a comedy club in Memphis. According to Essence, Marjorie came in during Steve’s set, and when he saw her, he claimed that he’d “marry [her] one day.”

It probably just seemed like a joke, but he evidently proved to be a man of his word. After several weeks of dating, Marjorie reportedly believed the TV host to be “the one.” However, if the two of them had such a connection all those years ago, why didn’t they get married until 2007?

The relationship fell apart because Steve was low on money and never around

According to Harvey, their relationship ran into trouble for the same reason that his first marriage did. With him trying so hard to get his comedy career off the ground, he wasn’t around as much as he needed to be. Steve said that he was so low on money that he couldn’t afford to drive back and see Marjorie when he wanted to.

As a result, the pair only dated for a year. By the time he got his big break on the variety series ‘Showtime at the Apollo,’ it was too late. Steve returned to her to discover that she’d already tied the knot with someone else. Their love story was going to have to wait several more decades before it could continue.

Steve Harvey had to live in his car for three years because of his financial situation

Steve saying he didn’t have the money to visit Marjorie wasn’t simply a case of him being frugal. His financial situation was dire, and it remained this way for several years. He admitted to People magazine that he had to live out of his car for three years, something he said grew difficult after just a week.

He reportedly kept a cooler in the backseat as a refrigerator while he relied on gas stations and hotel restrooms to do his business. He referred to that time of his life as “rock bottom,” although it never drove him to give up and go home. He had faith that he’d eventually turn things around, which he did. It’s just unfortunate that it took so long for Steve to achieve his goal.
